���������������� DHL EMPLOYEES DELIVER “GO GREEN” On April 25, Donaldson Elementary School welcomed DHL clerical employees <strong>June</strong> McGarvey and Cheryl Gamble from the Pittsburgh (PIT) service center. They provided 150 packets of wildflower seeds for the students to plant along the school grounds that border a municipal park. Additionally, the team provided DHL-branded “goodies” to students including DHL language decoders for the teachers to use with students learning a foreign language. Akshay Hari, a <strong>West</strong> <strong>Allegheny</strong> alumnus, Class of 2009, was invited to address the 229 recipients of the Carson Scholarship presented by the Pittsburgh Carson Scholarship Foundation at a banquet in April in downtown Pittsburgh. A Carson scholar alumnus, Akshay was awarded the Carson Scholarship in 2008 and 2009 for his academic achievement in high school. The Carson Scholarship Foundation also awarded a plaque to <strong>West</strong> <strong>Allegheny</strong> High School to honor him as the first scholar from the school district. He is presently a junior in the Swanson School of Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh. CORNELL DEDICATES SCOREBOARD TO MADONNA A new Cornell School District baseball scoreboard in memory of Ryan Madonna was dedicated to him in April. Ryan was the Cornell High School Class of 1999 valedictorian, a former assistant baseball coach, and a substitute teacher at Cornell before he was hired as a math teacher in the <strong>West</strong> <strong>Allegheny</strong> School District. The team record was 23-0. They played at Sportrak in Sewickley from October, 2011 until April, <strong>2012</strong>. All of the youths on the team are from the <strong>West</strong> <strong>Allegheny</strong> School District. OLYMPIC DAY INVOLVED MANY It was a day of Olympic proportions when <strong>West</strong> <strong>Allegheny</strong> High School hosted Olympic Day at the Joe DeMichela Stadium last month. The annual event brought together special needs student athletes from nine area schools. <strong>West</strong> <strong>Allegheny</strong> students from the cheerleading team, softball, football, basketball, track, and other teams lent their time to volunteer for this annual event. The <strong>West</strong> <strong>Allegheny</strong> High School show choir sang the National Anthem and the JROTC presented the colors to open the day’s events. Joining alumnus Jesse Lakes, right, and senior Justin Schreiber, front center, were some of the <strong>West</strong> <strong>Allegheny</strong> High School student volunteers.
