BITS AND PUBS ............................... PUB: THE HARTINGTON A quick straw poll in the office about the best pub garden in Brighton throws out a name I don’t know. “The Hartington, just off Elm Grove. Lovely little secret garden.” I decide to investigate one Monday morning in early June, descending on the place around eleven. It’s on Whippingham Street, about halfway down. “We’re not open,” says the young barman, cheerily, when I walk in the open door. “Can I look at the garden,” I say. “I just need to do a recce.” “Follow me,” he replies, smiling. We skip down some stairs and through a shady yard with wooden tables and I think ‘what’s the big deal?’ and then we turn the corner, and there it is. A ‘fairy garden’, as the sign says, beautifully landscaped, rising up a slope, and punctuated by giant poppies and several tables with chairs. That’s the one. Time for some research: The Hartington was purpose built as a pub in 1899, when the rest of the street went up. Its first landlord was a William Penfold. It used to be a hotel, as well, or at least they rented the rooms upstairs. It became a Charrington’s pub: for over 30 years it was run by a widow called Ivy, who brought up her kids there: her nephew still goes for a pint there every day. In the 50s there was a ‘bottle and jug’ off-sales hole in the wall: kids used to get money for the deposit on bottles, 1d for a pint, 2d for a quart. It was taken over by Sarah and Simon Colquhoun five years ago. They deladdified it a bit (though there’s still a pool table) and succeeded in making it a family and dog-friendly pub. And then, a year ago, they turned what had once been the property’s allotment, and for decades had been left overgrown, into a ‘fairy garden’. I return at six, buy a pint of Mosaic (there’s also Harvey’s Best on tap), and wait for my old friend Laura, who turns up with a very large and rather old black dog, called Monty. We’re there for a couple of hours, moving tables twice to follow the last of the sun. It really is a beautiful space, perfect for a bit of al fresco catch-up, during which I demolish a juicy £5 (Monday-night deal) burger, with chips and slaw. Alex Leith ....23....
