People in poor countries end up having problems such as:<br />

• Citizens not getting access to adequate basic education <strong>and</strong> health care, clean drinking<br />

water <strong>and</strong> sanitation,<br />

• Households not having minimum income that will enable them to provide in their basic<br />

subsistence needs, i.e., food, clothing <strong>and</strong> shelter.<br />

• No job creation <strong>and</strong> access to means <strong>of</strong> production<br />

• Not having good government <strong>and</strong> effective aid<br />

2.1.5 Economic development goals<br />

Communities differ in their geographic <strong>and</strong> political strengths <strong>and</strong> weaknesses. Each community<br />

will have a unique set <strong>of</strong> challenges for economic development, but the main goal in the broadest<br />

sense, economic development encompasses three major areas:<br />

• Policies that government undertakes to meet broad economic objectives including<br />

inflation control, high employment <strong>and</strong> sustainable growth.<br />
