THERE ARE approximately<br />
140 species of chafer or scarab<br />
beetles in New Zealand.<br />
These beetles have larvae that<br />
feed in the soil on roots and, as<br />
adults, they feed on the foliage<br />
of many plant species.<br />
The most well known scarab<br />
in New Zealand is the native<br />
grass grub beetle, costelytra<br />
zealandica, present in most<br />
pastures, gardens or lawns.<br />
The larvae of these beetles<br />
live in the soil and are<br />
characteristically C-shaped,<br />
creamy-whitish grubs with<br />
three pairs of slender legs and a<br />

darker head.<br />
Odontria species are chafers,<br />
larger in size with fuzzy/velvety<br />
appearance, while costelytra<br />
species are smoother and more<br />
shiny.<br />
Adults often fly at dusk about<br />
30min after sunset for about<br />
30min and are attracted to<br />
lights. They usually land on<br />
trees or shrubs where they<br />
forage on leaves and mate<br />
before laying eggs in the soil<br />
where the larvae spend their life<br />
before pupating near the soil<br />
surface.<br />

his family feature on the front cover of the book outside his<br />
home circa 1903. The book, by John Wilson (above) tells<br />
the story of the suburb from its working class beginnings in<br />
the 1860s through to the impact of the September 4, 2010,<br />
and February 22, 2011, earthquakes. The book costs $50<br />
and can be ordered through the Addington Neighbourhood<br />
