West Melton Kindergarten,
Nursery and Learning Centre
The West Melton Learning Centre
Kaiako and tamariki for the last couple of
months, have been focusing on learning
all about people who help us and keep us
safe, not only in our own community but
other professions within our society who
might help us too. We took a walk around
our local area, visiting the people in the
shopping centre, who made our large group
of children feel very welcome.
We enjoyed numerous visitors into the
centre including two police officers that
brought a car and motorbike with them.
The tamariki had a turn in the car turning
on the siren and sitting on the bike. We
had a visit from an ambulance officer with
an ambulance also, which was so valuable
for the tamariki to have a good look inside
and hear how the St John officer might help
them. Finally, we invited two volunteer
firefighters’. We learnt all about how to keep
safe and enjoyed trying on the huge fire
helmets and equipment too.
The tamariki have also been learning
about other professions who might help
them too such as optometrist, surf lifesaving,
dentist, doctors, nurses, nutritionist
etc, learning about real life roles and
opportunities for children to share their
experiences.
All of these discussions have been so
valuable to the tamariki and have given
them an insight into what all these services
do within our community and how they
can help us. Having the opportunity to
discuss and have their questions answered
have allowed the tamariki to explore,
discover and make sense of the community
around them and make connections and
links to the wider world too. Thank you
to all the local businesses and people who
have visited us.
