that it is an additi<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong> text. Christ's own words,<br />

as recorded in <strong>the</strong> Greek, are simply, "I am." To<br />

Moses in <strong>the</strong> wilderness, <strong>the</strong> Lord had said <strong>of</strong> this<br />

name, "This is My name forever, and this is My<br />

memorial unto all generati<strong>on</strong>s." (Ex. 3:14, 15) By<br />

this name Jesus had declared Himself to <strong>the</strong><br />

unbelieving Jews. (<strong>John</strong> 8:24, 28, 58) The time had<br />

now come, <strong>of</strong> which He had said, "When ye have<br />

lifted up <strong>the</strong> S<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> man, <strong>the</strong>n shall ye know that I<br />

am." In <strong>the</strong> very hour <strong>of</strong> His betrayal, and to His<br />

persecutors, He revealed Himself by that glorious<br />

name by which He delivered <strong>the</strong> children <strong>of</strong> Israel<br />

from b<strong>on</strong>dage, and by which He delivers all who<br />

trust in it. In His answer to <strong>the</strong>m, in making<br />

Himself known as <strong>the</strong> One whom <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

seeking to put to death, Jesus revealed Himself to<br />

<strong>the</strong>m as <strong>the</strong>ir Saviour. But <strong>the</strong>y were <strong>the</strong>n too<br />

blinded to receive <strong>the</strong> revelati<strong>on</strong>. No evidence<br />

could affect <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong>n, but afterwards some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

very <strong>on</strong>es who had been His betrayers and<br />

murderers found peace in believing <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> I Am--<br />

<strong>the</strong> Author <strong>of</strong> life.<br />
