that it is an addition to the text. Christ's own words,
as recorded in the Greek, are simply, "I am." To
Moses in the wilderness, the Lord had said of this
name, "This is My name forever, and this is My
memorial unto all generations." (Ex. 3:14, 15) By
this name Jesus had declared Himself to the
unbelieving Jews. (John 8:24, 28, 58) The time had
now come, of which He had said, "When ye have
lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I
am." In the very hour of His betrayal, and to His
persecutors, He revealed Himself by that glorious
name by which He delivered the children of Israel
from bondage, and by which He delivers all who
trust in it. In His answer to them, in making
Himself known as the One whom they were
seeking to put to death, Jesus revealed Himself to
them as their Saviour. But they were then too
blinded to receive the revelation. No evidence
could affect them then, but afterwards some of the
very ones who had been His betrayers and
murderers found peace in believing on the I Am--
the Author of life.
