and speak one to another, everyone to his brother,
saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the
word that cometh forth from the Lord. And they
come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit
before thee as My people, and they hear thy words,
but they do them not: for with their mouth they
show much love, but their heart goeth after their
gain. And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely
song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play
well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but
they do them not." (Eze. 33:30-32) They praise the
singer and the song, but they do not have any
thought that it is more than a thing merely to listen
to.
Jesus cut short the compliment of Nicodemus.
All that Nicodemus said was true, and we may
believe that he was sincere in saying it; but Jesus
did not care to talk about Himself or His work.
Very abrupt and ungracious His words doubtless
seemed to Nicodemus, in response to his polite
greeting. The ruler had praised Jesus, and had not
the slightest idea but that Jesus would feel gratified
on account of his attention, for he had no thought
