Tough weekend for
Leggett at tournament
By A nne Marie Tobin
‘ I t was a tough weekend for
former Lynnfield High wrestling
standout D evin Leggett
and Team U SA at the 2018
Pan American Junior Judo
Championship in Cordoba,
Argentina. U SA, which had
hoped to improve on last year’s
runner-up finish, failed to win
a single gold medal and picked
up just one one silver medal
and four bronz e medals.
Leggett, competing in the
Junior 73k division on Saturday,
lost to eventual bronz e medalist
K eagan Y oung of Canada in his
first bout, then was bounced
from the tournament in the
next round, losing to Barbosa
Arkangel of Columbia.
Leggett, currently ranked
No. 2 in the nation in the 73k
division, was one of 37 athletes
selected to the American team.
One-hundred forty-four athletes
from 14 countries competed
in the meet. Braz il dominated
the meet and won the
most medals with nine gold,
three silver and three bronz e.
Earlier this summer, Leggett
won the silver medal in the
I nternational Judo F ederation
( I JF ) Junior Male 73kg division
at the 2018 U SA Judo
Junior Olympic National
Championships in Spokane,
Washington June 22-23. He
defeated the 2017 gold medalist
Liam Wright in the semifinals,
but came up short in the final,
losing to Sando Chaldz e of
Brooklyn.
Leggett followed up the next
day with a third place finish at
the U SA Judo Junior Olympic
I nternational Championships,
also in Spokane.
Leggett trains at Pedro’s Judo
Club in Wakefield under the
tutelage of the U SA Olympic
coach Jimmy Pedro and current
Olympian silver medalist
Travis Stevens.
Lynnfield Bears softball team gets red-hot
The Lynnfield Bears softball team got hot
when it counted, winning Lynnfield’s first
Essex County Women’s Softball League
Championship ( ECWSL) June 17. The
Bears, coached by John and Lisa D ias, edged
Rowley Black, 12-11, to claim the Junior
D ivision crown. The win was the first ever
ECWSL title in the history of the Lynnfield
youth softball program.
The Bears trailed early, 9-5, but came
alive in the bottom of the fourth. Ellie
Grieves started the rally with a leadoff
single. Taylor Collins and Gia Gagnon followed
with back-to-back walks, then Libby
Considine brought home a run with a ground
out. Emily Thompson worked a 10-pitch
walk to load the bases for Lulu D ias, who
smacked a 2-run single. K ate Cullinane then
slammed a ball to deep left field for a 2-run
double to give the Bears their first lead of the
game, 10-9.
K ayla George, Lulu D ias and Libby
Considine shared the load in the pitcher’s
circle, as they had in three prior playoff wins.
K ey fielding plays were turned in by Morgan
Hubbard, I z z y F iorentino, Emily Thompson
and Lauren Lane to help secure the victory.
D ias led the offense with three hits, while
Cullinane, Considine, Lily Collins and
Sophia F iorentino had two hits each.
The championship wrapped up Lynnfield’s
third season playing in the ECWSL.
D espite being in the middle of the pack in
population among the 19 participating towns,
Lynnfield was second only to Amesbury in
the number of teams it fielded in the league
with three teams in the Senior D ivision and
five teams in the Junior D ivision for grades
4-6.
“The high level of participation and success
is a testament to the commitment of
Lynnfield’s players, coaches and board
members,” said Jerry Guerra. “The league’s
mission is to provide a fun, instructional and
safe outlet for girls to learn and enjoy the
awesome sport of softball, and to provide a
healthy feeder system that will help create
and maintain a consistently strong high
school softball program.”
