Before you start this stage on the south bank of the
Danube, you should walk up to the »Schlögener
Blick«, located 30 minutes above the village Schlögen.
From up here you can enjoy the wonderful
view of the Danube-bend Schlögen. After you
gave yourself an overview, you will get to know the
forest slopes of this free meander, called the »Donauleiten«,
at close range.
Natural trails take you past Inzell and Kaiserau,
where Castle Neuhaus soon rises up on a rock.
Arriving in the small market town of Aschach, explore
the worthwhile center with its age-old town
houses whose façades and courtyards are from
the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. In
the modern »Schopper-boat Museum« you will
learn interesting and curious things about the old
craft of shipbuilding, and in the Old Parish Church,
discover the alleged healing powers of the »Danube
Cross«.
of the Danube cycle path starts way back in Roman
Times. Its main square is counted as one of
the most beautiful in Upper Austria, as the houses
haven’t really been altered since the Middle Ages.
Despite its size, the city’s church has got the byname
Eferding’s Cathedral. Just as much as this
church the magnificent Castle Starhemberg with
its museums and exhibitions is definitely worth a
visit.
The Cistercian Abbey of Wilhering (founded in
1146) with its Rococo church, its Fritz Fröhlich
collection (art gallery) and the Abbey museum offer
additional culture along the way. After your fleeting-visit,
cycle can board the ferry to the northern
shore in Ottensheim, where after they‘ll be able to
enjoy the last cycle stage to Linz.
From Aschach it is not very long until you reach
