LINZ TO GREIN
// PILL MAKING AND CELTIC TOMBS
The upper Austrian capital Linz seduces you
with its variety of interesting sights to an extensive
sightseeing tour: Through the old town including
the main square and the »Landstraße«, to the
Castle Museum, the Botanical Garden, St.
Mary’s Cathedral, the Musical Theatre at the
»Volksgarten«, Lentos Museum and the Ars
Electronica Center – just to name some of the
most important sights. Sure enough the »Pöstlingberg«,
another landmark of the city, is going
to wave goodbye when you leave.
Soon you pass Steyregg with its beautiful Castle.
Its history dates back to the 11 th /12 th century, but it
only opens its gates for events taking place there.
about making pills and mixing ointments, as it
hosts Austrias only pharmacy museum.
Close to Au on the Danube there is a possibility
to visit the vibrant city centre of Perg, where there
are many restaurants and Cafes. The next halting
place can be combined with a visit to the Celtic
village of Mitterkirchen, an open-air museum
that reflects life in the year of 700 BC. Not far away
you can also visit the monastery Baumgartenberg,
whose church is counted as a jewel of the
baroque age due to its magnificent stuccowork.
Unhurriedly, the river is now accompanying you to
Grein, the »Perl of the Strudengau«.
A bit aside of the Danube you are now biking to
Mauthausen. Once founded by the Babenberger
as a toll booth (this is also where the name is coming
from) it attained a sad popularity for being the
habitat of the biggest Austrian NS – concentration
camp (memorial place!). In the Castle Pragstein
you can learn everything you ever wanted to know
