A 38-0 drubbing at the hands of Nelson College on Saturday has all but ended their top four chances. Lincoln Combined will need to beat competition leaders, Christchurch Boys’ High in their final round-robin game this Saturday and hope results go their way. Coach Mike Wilson said his team struggled to match up against the size of the Nelson College forwards and their strong ball-runners on a muddy Nelson College field. “We couldn’t match their physicality,” he said. “They have some really strong ball-runners and while we tried to contain them, we could only do so much.” Wilson said his team was hard on defence for much of the first half. “It was 12-0 at half-time and we’d had no ball except for five minutes at the end of the half we’re we got them down to 14 men for repeated infringements but couldn’t get over the line.” Wilson said conceding a soft try from the second-half kickoff didn’t help matters, but the boggy ground conditions took a toll later in the game. “We had (halfback Robert Sporke) almost sick at half-time and he is a supremely fit guy,” Wilson said. “Nelson are a very good team, possibly the best we’ve played and in those conditions, they’re hard to stop.” Lincoln Combined did welcome back captain Wil Gualter but it wasn’t enough. PHOTO: KAREN CASEY Broadfield sit on top of netball table • By Jacob Page BROADFIELD A have surged to the top of the Selwyn premier netball competition after beating rivals Greenpark A 56-48 at the Lincoln Event Centre on Saturday. The two teams have traded victories this season, but with points going towards the semi-finals in the third round, Greenpark A secured a crucial win. Defending champions Lincoln A got their top four hopes on track with a 64-47 win over Southbridge A while Greenpark B sit ahead of their A team on the ladder after cooling Rolleston A’s good start 52-39. Broadfield A coach Yvonne Crichton-Hill said every game was crucial in the final round but she was thrilled with the complete team effort to get the win. “We need to be winning every game from here on in,” she said. “There’s a really good feel around the team, really positive,” she said. Experience at both ends of the court, particularly with shooter Maia Hill could prove Broadfield’s A best asset. The win saw Broadfield A go a point clear of both Lincoln A and Greenpark B at the top of the competition but with just five points separating all six teams, everyone still had a chance to make the final four, Greenpark A and Lincoln A will do battle in the pick of the games this Saturday. Another loss for Greenpark A could make their road to the semi-finals challenging. Greenpark B will play Broadfield A and Rolleston A will meet Southbridge A. Results: Greenpark B 52, Rolleston A 39; Lincoln A 64, Southbridge A 47; Broadfield A 56, Greenpark A 48. Darfield will meet Waihora, after the competition favourites easily accounted for Springston 32-19 in Tai Tapu, scoring five tries in the process. After doing the business at Prebbleton Oval, Darfield will host the final which should give them the advantage of a vocal home crowd. A missed Prebbleton penalty closing in on full-time was all the good SPORTS Darfield survive and advance to shield final fortune Darfield needed to hold on. Prebbleton were unable to make the most of a 22-9 advantage. After a gritty comeback and two Scott Mitchell drop goals saw Darfield earn and then cling to their one-point lead for much of the second half. Prebbleton had many attacking raids near the Darfield try line but each time they came up short. Waihora’s charge to win both the Combined Country and Ellesmere senior rugby titles never looked in danger against Springston in the other semi-final. Springston, who were new to top flight rugby this season and performed admirably, couldn’t recover from an early 12-0 deficit. Tries to hard-working forward Joe Robins and Michael Burnett had Waihora up 12-0. Springston did get on the board through flanker Sam Lawn but still faced a 17-5 half-time deficit. Waihora struck first with a converted try through Matt Saunders which Harrison Kirk converted. Waihora’s fifth try to Will Hurst was the icing on the cake. Waihora took the Murray Cooper Shield off Darfield a fortnight ago the last time they met, while Darfield will be looking to cap a stellar season by causing an upset.
