The Rolleston Volunteer Fire Brigade was called out to one of their more “trickier” rescues to free the animal. The brigade was alerted at about 10am on Sunday morning by a property owner on Andesite Drive in Rolleston who heard the screaming of the cat. Senior firefighter Cam Kenyon said it was trickier to rescue than normal, as most cats the fire brigade are called out to are normally up trees or power poles. The fire brigade was required to wedge the fence away from the block wall with a crowbar to free the cat. He said the cat, named Lola, was frightened and ran away to its owner’s house on Andesite Drive when it was freed. • By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A GLENTUNNEL resident fighting permanent chlorination in parts of Malvern has been asked to pay for further information he seeks on the issue. The district council has told retired farmer Brian Thompson it is estimated he will have to pay $608 for it to carry out three Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act requests he made between June 28 and July 1. It is estimated it will take the district council eight hours of staff time to collate and provide the information on the requests. Because the first hour of preparing the response is free, the cost of the staff time works out to be about $86.8 per hour. Mr Thompson said he refused to pay the money. The district council confirmed it permanently chlorinated the Sheffield-Waddington water supplies in June and the Malvern Hills Hartleys Road supplies this month and the next. District council asset manager Murray Washington said answering these requests has a significant cost to staff in terms of time being taken away from core tasks, as well as to the ratepayer. He said the district council works to be as open as possible and does not stand in the way of releasing information to ratepayers and stakeholders. The 19- year- old was one of 20 contestants to be selected for the finals held at Auckland’s Sky City. In a post online, Miss Curd said she was proud to have been one of the top-10 finalists in the country. “For a girl who has never entered anything like this before or any real competition for that matter I couldn’t be happier with last nights results,” she said. Estelle Curd, of Wellington was crowned the top prize and will go on to represent New Zealand in the international Miss Universe competition in America. Miss Curd has been modelling for about six years and says her reasons for entering the competition were to “explore a little bit” and see what good she could do with what she’s learnt.
