August
2018
This summer has been a hot and muggy one in WNC! My poor older horse is covered in welts
from the fly bites. Gnats are crawling in my eyes the whole time I’m at the barn, and the
horseflies are as big as the field mice this year. As much as I hate them, as a Biology Teacher
I have to remember that they do have positive qualities as well. It helps me keep faith in the
fact that there is always a silver lining, even for the black fly that has ninja’d his way into your
hot morning coffee at the barn or the gnat in your glass of wine in the evening. You might not
know this, but Black flies are a good indicator of clean running water nearby, they can’t breed
without it. They are also important pollinators for many wildflowers and early spring fruits such
as blueberries! Black flies also feed beneficial wildlife such as bats, fly catchers and dragon
flies. We will see them fade out in the months to come as fall colors make a debut and we start
cursing about other things like raking leaves and Houdinis destroying blankets. For now, I will
think of the taste of a warm blueberry muffin or my daughter singing as we pick blackberries
whenever I get bit and say a little thank you to the natural balance that mother nature makes
sure to keep between the negatives and positives.
I was born and raised in Haywood county where my
family raises beef cattle and meat goats. I graduated
from NC State in 2016 and now work as the Livestock
Agent for Buncombe, Henderson, and Polk counties. I
love studying and participating in new research in the
livestock field, as well as helping youth involved in the
livestock industry.
We will be discussing different types of
forages that are grown in this area and the
pros and cons of each. Along with this we
will be discussing different management
practices that include ways to increase
yield, along with weed id and control. In
addition, we will discuss the benefits of
forage analysis to improve animal health.
FRC August Member of the Month
Rick Millweard
FRC’s August Member of the Month
is Rick Millweard. Rick was
nominated because of all the work he
does with H.E.R.D., as well as
helping to train horses through his
own Equine Relationship Coaching
business. His work helps horses all
around the area to become the best
version of themselves and creates
mutually beneficial partnerships
between horses and their riders.
Spotlight On Our Members
Rick has been a resident of the
Foothills for around seven years. He
and his family were relocating from
Charleston and needed to find an affordable place to live with their three horses. They were in
a free boarding situation in Charleston, SC until owner died and the property eventually sold.
With astronomical boarding prices there, they knew it was time to find somewhere else to go.
They were so happy when they finally settled in Columbus. “We live in horse heaven and are
so happy with our little slice. We now have 10 times more friends here than we had after living
in Charleston for 30 years. We love our simple life here,” explains Rick.
Rick first heard about the FRC when he met our former president, Jodie Lees Jones, at CVS
where he was working as a pharmacist. He appreciates the programs that FRC has. Rick and
his wife have three horses and just this past month adopted a wild mustang from the BLM.
When we talked, Rick had only worked his new mustang for six short days and couldn’t be
more thrilled with their progress. Danny is Rick’s personal horse, he got him after completing a
3-week old colt starting school in Colorado. He thought it would be a perfect way to practice his
new skill. Danny is now 13 and Rick said he would not trade him for the world! His wife has a
paint quarter horse, Cody, and they also have Fargo, who is semi-retired at 24.
Besides trail riding, Rick mainly practices natural horsemanship. His goal when working with a
horse is to develop a willing partner. He is very fortunate for the opportunity to attend three 10-
week stints at the Parelli International Study Center. Twice he traveled to Pagosa Springs,
Colorado and once to Ocala Florida. The experience and the education has been invaluable to
Rick and he loves to be able to use that experience to
help people with their problems. “A lot of the time I find
it’s not the horse that is being problematic- it’s the
human not communicating their needs to the horse in
the right way. I have calls for anything ranging from
trailer loading to standing still at mounting block. If you
know the language and are an effective leader, the
horse will comply with your requests,” he explains.
On top of his coaching business, Rick is also a volunteer for the local rescue organization
H.E.R.D. and is in charge of training volunteers. “We all need to be on the same page when
handling these horses and the transformation is unbelievable. It is very rewarding to see some
go from prey animal to partner,” he says.
FRC Scholarship Reminder
One of the perks of being an FRC member, is that you are
eligible to apply for one of the four $250 Member
Scholarships that we award each year. Scholarships can be
used in a variety of ways. In the past, they have been used for riders
to defer the cost of going to events such as championship competitions,
rare educational opportunities, or clinics applicable to your discipline. There
are only a few requirements to be considered for a scholarship. You must be a
member at the time of your application, and you also must be willing to share the
knowledge you gained through your scholarship experience with the club in some way (ideas
must be approved by the scholarship committee). This could be a short presentation at one of
our seminars, info table or infographic at shows, newsletter report, etc.
Want to apply for a scholarship, but not sure if your endeavor would be approved- don’t worry!
The application is short, sweet and to the point. If there happens to be an influx of applicants
at any deadline, volunteer service to the FRC in the current and preceding membership year
will be considered when awarding scholarships. Application deadlines are April 1 st , July 1 st ,
October 1 st , and January 1 st depending on the date of the event. Any member is eligible to
apply!
