Fire rages, homes at risk

With both of us working fulltime
and a very busy family, it’s a
juggle. But all four sons and my
wife were at the rally a few weeks
ago, so the family is right there
behind me. The trust strongly
believes that the red zone needs
a heart and something that will
generate activity. In the Regenerate
survey, most people said they
wanted a red zone that they can
participate in. While walking
and cycle tracks, are nice, it’s also
important to create activity and
economic benefit, as well as draw
people in. The lake will be consistent
with the proposed green
spine, which the trust supports
and won’t detract from it in any
way.
What does a day off look like?
A day off for me always starts off
with watching children’s sport. I
love getting out to watch my boys
playing rugby. In the afternoon I’ll
either go for a jog around the park
and then I’ll come home and read
a book and switch-off. I like military
history. So any novels with a
little bit of a history bent, I enjoy.
I’m particularly interested in Roman
history as well. There are a
number of authors who specialise
in historical fiction, like Bernard
Cornwell and Conn Iggulden. It’s
really reading on the iPad and

having a bit of quiet time.
How did you get involved in
the legal profession?
My father was a lawyer with
a firm originally in Timaru and
Palmerston North. It must be
in the blood, my great-great
grandfather Arthur Rhodes,
who was actually the Mayor of
Christchurch for a while, founded
Rhodes & Co. He actually had
a very strong connection with
the east and had a lot of land
out there. I think those sort of
little historic things are just a
happy coincidence. But you do
sometimes wonder if there’s a
connection or calling to that area.
Then again, you don’t read into it
too much.
Did you study law in
Christchurch?
I studied at Otago first and
then did my Masters in company
and commercial law at the University
of London for a couple of
years. I travelled around Europe
and Africa for a while. I even
got to visit Gallipoli, which was
particularly special. I returned
to New Zealand in June of 1993
and started at Lane Neave. I
also worked in London when I
was over there, then came back
to Christchurch where I was
a partner in a couple of firms
before I joined Anderson Lloyd. I
ultimately ended up in Christchurch
because it has always been
my city. After school in Dunedin,
then London, it felt like it was
time to come home. When you’re
young you spend a lot of time
running away from home before
you end up appreciating it and
becoming passionate for the city.
Having been the young man living
in other cities, you find that
Christchurch is a great place to
have a family, settle down in and
look to the future.
