Road complaints on rise
POTHOLES, LITTER and
sweeping.
The requests to the city council
for these things to be dealt with
have risen more than 20 per cent
in the last year.
City council
chief executive
Karleen
Edwards
revealed in
her executive’s
report
that people
requesting
Karleen
Edwards
services relating
to the state
of the roads
has jumped from 2409 to 2928.
“The number of requests for
service related to transport increased
by 22 per cent in the last
year. The three job types were
related to potholes, roadside litter
and sweeping,” Dr Edwards
said.
City councillor Yani Johanson
said it was a “major issue” for the
council.
“It basically ties in to that
whole push towards better maintenance,”
he said.
Cr Johanson said the residents’
BUMPY RIDE: The New Brighton Rd and Bower Ave
roundabout.
survey clearly showed people
in the city were fed up with the
poor state of roads. Only 27 per
cent of respondents said they
were “satisfied” with the condition
of roads and footpaths.
He questioned Dr Edwards
on what the council was doing
in response to that and if it expected
the number to stabilise.
“We’ve been doing some
work around our maintenance
contracts, making sure they’re
responsive and proactive,” Dr
Edwards said.
However, she also said
residents were becoming more
aware about how they can report
potholes, litter and the like, so
naturally the requests would
increase.
“I think some of this is about
increased awareness and increased
ability for people to put
in customer service requests so
we’re likely to continue to see
more of those for a period of
time before they level off.”
Youths abused online
Parents of one of the youths
and the teenage girl were
reluctant to comment when approached
by The Star yesterday.
They said lawyers were involved
over the issue.
The mother of one of the
youths said he had been the
victim of the most “horrendous
and disgusting” abuse.
But the girl involved posted on
Instagram saying: “I’m not here
to try talk my way out of posting
the two videos because I know I
did the wrong thing and posted
something disturbing on social
media.
“I would like to apologise for
not taking any further action on
the situation to try help it, at the
time I was shocked and didn’t
take the time to think about my
consequences.
“The cat’s death itself wasn’t
my doing, nor was I even there
as I felt uncomfortable with the
situation and left like the boys
told me to,” said the post.
Mr Helem said the SPCA and
police had received a number
of copies of the video from members
of the public.
Mr Helem said the SPCA had
not yet made contact with the
two youths and teenage girl.
There is a range of penalties
that SPCA can apply through the
court system for cruelty, neglect
or reckless treatment of animals.
These range from an education
conversation or letter, a formal
warning or prosecution in extreme
cases.
“Our processes involve gathering
evidence and information,
talking to witnesses and people
involved then it gets reviewed
and we make a decision from
there,” said Mr Helem.
Dalziel remains off work
MAYOR LIANNE Dalziel
remains off work after suffering a
concussion on Sunday.
Ms Dalziel worked from home
on Wednesday and took Monday
and Tuesday off after she fainted
and hit her head at an event to
mark the 73rd anniversary of the
nuclear bombing of Hiroshima
and Nagasaki in the Botanic
Gardens.
She is being reassessed by her
doctor today before she returns
