Convention
Report
by Pat Roeser
Director of Conventions
They were off and running
from the start at the 24 th
Annual COAI Convention
in Clarksville, IN. Preregistration
was a mere 122.
However, over 70 people
signed up at the door. Many
thanks to the InKy Clowns
for the hard work that went
into making this a very
successful convention.
The convention was funfilled
with a lot of downhome
flavor. The Kentucky
Derby theme party was a big
sensation! Attendees wore
hat creations they brought
or could make right on
the spot. Competition was
fierce! Every table could be
personally decorated with the
theme and voted on with a
ballot found in the program
book. A couple of Colonel
Sanders type characters
showed up as well as ladies
in formal attire. The DJ had a
scavenger hunt and confused
folks when told to find
Hawaiian currency which is
actually the same as we use
on the continental US! There
were also opportunities to be
photographed as a jockey or
wearing a wreath of roses.
Almost 40 people took the
side trip to Churchill Downs.
Our guide Gene, who has
been at the track for over 50
years, enhanced
the tour with his knowledge
and wit. We dined on the
edge of the track with horses
and riders coming right up
to us. The museum was very
interesting with a great movie
presentation of Churchill
Downs’ history.
Check out www.YouTube.
com on the Internet and in the
search area put in COAI THE
SONG. New board member
Glenn Kohlberger wrote new
words to YMCA. The COAI
Board performed “The Song”
during the dealers' show.
Attendees participated at the
show and again at the theme
party when the DJ played the
YMCA song.
After the awards' banquet,
people disappeared to check
out their score sheets and
pack. Sunday was the hardest
day as everyone left. There
was lots of hugging and
good-byes. We hope to see
you all next year!
Next year? That comes
up real fast so start saving
up those pennies, nickels,
dimes, and quarters. We need
to meet in Houston, TX for
A Little Bit Country/A Little
Bit of Rock ’n’ Roll. Their
convention runs April 20-
25, 2010. Watch for more in
upcoming issues of The New
Calliope. u
