Clowning in the French
Pyrenees
Submitted by Bill Gillespie
WOW! What a great time.
My wife and I never thought
we would ever get to clown
and entertain overseas, let
alone in such a serene place
as Saint Savin, France. We
are known as “Toe-Knee the
Italian Clown” and “Cotton
Candy” and entertain full time
in Jacksonville, FL. Though
we are very busy in December,
after the holiday season we
find there is not as much work
so we often take a holiday.
This year my daughter,
Valentina, was going to
school in Rennes, France from
January through April so we
thought, “Why don’t we all go
and visit friends in Bordeaux
and spend New Year’s with
them!”
Deciding it would be a great
time to do some entertaining,
I “skyped” my Bordeaux
friends asking them to find a
hospital, day care, a school, or
somewhere we could entertain
children and/or adults. Since
my wife and I do not speak
French, (and our friends do!)
we depend on their son Jerome
to be our interpreter.
As I began to prepare, I
started to think about what
magic tricks I could do that
would not need patter. With a
language barrier I needed to
think about making things very
visual.
My friend, Jean-Marie,
emailed me to say he was
working on a band to provide
music for our “Circus
Extravaganza.” He had made
up a poster with our picture on
it. He turned out to be quite
the agent. The children we
were scheduled to entertain
were sponsored by Rotary
International and Lions Club
International.
When we arrived in
Bordeaux I discovered Jean-
Marie gleaned his band music
from his computer. It was
great music and allowed us
the opportunity to pause when
necessary during the show. It
would have taken a real band
a lot of practice to get to know
our act.
Saint Savin is a small,
quaint village complete with a
town square. In the middle is a
fountain and a background of
scenery that is breath-taking.
We were guests at Le Viscos,
which is a owned by friends
of Jean-Marie’s, Jean-Pierre
Sant-Martin and his wife,
Francoise. Both speak English
so Francoise became our
interpreter.
On the second day we did
a run through of the show. I
was concerned as my wife,
Portia, was ill, but she lived
up to “the show must go on.”
Francoise, with her outgoing
personality, was a perfect fit as
the translator.
Though I was concerned
about whether anyone would
come, that was soon put to
rest. Children and adults
crowded into the building. We
started the show, did some
magic tricks, and handed out
stickers. We were treated like
celebrities.
After the show, face
painting, and balloons, we had
a little parade. Two of the older
boys held the French flag and
one held the American flag.
What a grand parade for such a
small village.
While we were out doing
the parade and having our
pictures taken, some folks
went back to the performance
hall and transformed it into a
party room. There were cakes
made by Jean-Pierre (who
happens to be one of the best
chefs in the world!), fresh
crêpes, fruit, juice, and French
champagne to celebrate the
success of the show. Francoise
later told us that nearly every
child in the village was at the
show and what a wonderful
thing to bring the community
together.
Our stay was wonderful. It
was so gratifying to give back
to the community in some way.
Thank you to COAI for
making us Ambassadors of
Clowning to France. I am
sure we have served you well.
We have also been named
Ambassadors to Italy and
will be returning to France in
the spring for a week to do a
magic show as magicians for
Annie “The Clown of
Barbados” visits Haiti to
spread Christmas Cheer
Submitted by Annie
Last December I visited
Haiti. During this year alone
Haiti had been affected by
three hurricanes.
In Barbados there has
been a lot of effort placed
on collecting shoe boxes
with gifts for the children of
Haiti. The brain child of this
shoe box project is a lady in
Barbados, Jenny
Tryhane of
United
Caribbean Trust. Her Website
is www.unitedcaribbeantrust.
org. This is a non-profit
organization.
The gift boxes are
usually decorated and nicely
organized with gifts and a
little note for the child. The
boxes are distributed and
arranged according to the age
and gender of the children.
A number of churches,
businesses and schools have
come together to work on this
project and pack shoes boxes.
This year, because of the three
hurricanes, more items were
taken to Haiti.
It was last October when
I approached Jenny and
expressed interest in going
to Haiti to perform when she
distributes gifts. She tries to
have a party at each location
using her puppets and a few
gospel illustrations which are
translated for her in French
and tell of God's greater gift of
eternal life. This presentation
ties in with the gift. The project
is about more than the gift and
the party. The goal is to have
profiles of children of Haiti,
who are impoverished, posted
on the Website so that they can
be sponsored for education and
after-school programs.
Despite the apprehension
I had of visiting Haiti (one
hears of poverty, poor water
resources, etc), I was
ready to go once Jenny
explained to me
the children
Annie hopes to return to the orphanage and help by
sponsoring a child.
may have never seen a clown
and in most instances the
children visited may have
never received a Christmas
gift. I was surprised.
So I went. I stayed at
two places including a girls'
orphanage. At the party on
Dec 29, I did meet and greet,
twisted balloon shapes, painted
faces, gave out foam clown
noses and clown nose stickers,
and took photos in clown with
each child who received a gift.
Originally, we had only
39 shoe boxes to give out.
But word spread quickly and
people came to the church with
more. We ultimately gave out
over 100 boxes.
My goal is to return to
the orphanage and sponsor
Madame Yol (the woman who
runs it) to visit Barbados so
she can have a few days to rest.
She works at her orphanage
as well as at a fabric store.
I would also like to sponsor
one child for one year at
the orphanage and I would
love to be able to sponsor
one teacher’s salary at the
orphanage for one year.
It was an incredible trip that
will stay with me always.
Dear Clowns from Russia
by Jimmie “JimBo” Martin
Along with 25 other clowns
I joined Dr. Patch Adams and
his brother, Wildman, for
15 days, bringing joy to the
hurting children who reside in
hospitals and orphanages in
Moscow and St. Petersburg,
Russia.
Traveling with us were
seven Russian clowns from
the university. They were
learning the ropes of bringing
joy. I couldn’t understand a
word they said but their love
for children and their actions
told me everything I needed to
know.
There was a special clown
who traveled with us for a
few days. Antoschka was a
bundle of dynamite. She stood
about 5 feet tall and had fiery
red hair, wore a jaunty little
black felt hat with a shiny
green band around it, a yellow
and red striped sweater, black
pants with red cuffs, and tiny
gold bells that jingled as she
performed. The first time I saw
her in action she was juggling
and doing slight-of-hand magic
tricks for the children.
One evening she called
Patch to the center of the stage
and asked him to bend over.
As he was bending over, she
climbed aboard his 6’4” frame
and sat on his shoulders, then
did a one-arm handstand on
A trip to Russia brought clowns of all nationalities together.
his head! We were afraid she
would fall or Patch would
stumble. But Antoschka was
a professional and did a great
job. She is also a tight-rope
walker in the circus. What is
even more impressive is that
she is 54 years old!
As we rode the bus together
she told me that she had joined
the Russian circus five years
ago. Wow, there’s still time for
me to run away and join the
circus!
One other experience
we had that surprised and
delighted us occurred at one of
the orphanages. We were met
by a clown troupe of children,
all dressed out in their clown
costumes. We went there
to bring them joy and they
surprised us by bringing us joy.
I was very proud to
represent COAI as the
International Clown
Ambassador to Russia. u
The New Calliope Convention Issue

President’s Comments
by Tom King
WOW! What a convention.
All at COAI 2009 Convention
in Clarksville, IN had a
great time. If you missed the
convention, you missed a fun
time. Thanks InKy Clowns
for a job well done. I want to
thank everyone who came to
the convention and to those
who worked so hard behind
the scene to make things
work so smoothly. When the
convention was visited by the
“Unknown Gorilla” were you
able to guess whom it was?
Thanks to all of the people
who were willing to play and
wear the costume. No matter
how hard you try, sometimes
there are people you just can’t
disguise! Be sure to check out
all of this year’s convention
news and photos in this and
future issues of The New
Calliope.
Now I have to decide if I
need to unpack my suitcase
or just keep it on the ready
for next year’s big COAI
25th Anniversary Celebration
during the convention to be
held in Houston, TX and
hosted by the Cheerful Clowns
Alley. Remember, everything
is bigger and better in Texas!
Look out Houston, here we
come! Keep your ears and
eyes open for all of the cool
events planned for our 25 th
Anniversary. Be sure to send in
your photos and stories to be
used in the anniversary issues
of The New Calliope.
Have you planned your
Clown Week activities? I
look forward to a busy week
clowning with my home alley
the Kanawha Klowns, in the
Charleston-Huntington, WV
area. We have filled our clown
plate with lots of activities
and hope you and your alley
do the same. Clown Week is a
great time to put new life into
your hometown clowning. Be
sure to take lots of photos and
keep a detailed list of all of
your activities and send the
photos and an article to The
New Calliope. Our Editor, Pat
Newton, looks forward to and
counts on your participation
by sending in articles, photos
and suggestions to keep
our publication the number
one source of clown arts
information in the
world.
Again, thanks
to the attendees of this years
COAI convention. I hope that
you share the education from
this year’s event with your
peers who were unable to
attend. The excitement will be
contagious, and we encourage
you to spread the word about
the benefits of joining COAI.u
Surviving Line Work
Line Work: Two words
that strike terror into the
hearts of even seasoned
performers. Visions of angry
mobs bearing torches come
to mind. Many successful
performers will not do
line work. I love it! With
the proper preparation and
attitude, you can make the
experience a profitable one.
Be ready to meet some of
the most pushy, inconsiderate
people you have ever seen!
That’s what you’ll get if you
approach it the wrong way!
Done correctly, you will
meet some of the happiest,
most considerate people in
the world. It goes without
saying you must have a good
product to be successful
at this. I want to rephrase
this: You must have a good
product in order not to fail
catastrophically!
First determine what your
goal for line work is; what
do you need to accomplish
by doing the work. I am not
talking about making money
- I am talking about fulfilling
the clients’ needs. Perhaps
the client just wants everyone
to be served, whether you
are painting faces, doing
balloons,
or
handing out treats. At first
glance, the “Dog and Sword”
production line, or the “Just
a simple picture” painting
factory looks easy enough.
Any First of May could do
it. What your client really
needs is happy attendees
at their event. Handing out
three twist dogs, or smiley
face imprints, leaves the
guests thinking “I stood in
line 30 minutes for THIS?”
Try to steer the client away
from this attitude. Emphasize
your ability to do just a little
bit more for each person
you service. You would
be surprised at the results
an extra 30 seconds can
produce! The methods for
doing this are for another
series of articles. Work on
your skills!
Before you accept the gig,
get all of your information
straight. Will the client
supply table/chairs/etc.?
What will your location look
like? Can you move your
location to better suit the
needs of the guests? What
about inclement weather?
(Get a non-refundable
deposit!) I would caution
against working out in the
sun, no matter what the
weather. Long term
exposure to the elements,
however benign, can become
unpleasant! I always ensure
I am out of direct sunlight,
on level, dry ground. Why
insist on level, dry ground?
Ever had to perch on a steep
incline for long periods? You
won’t like it, and neither will
the guests.
Take care of yourself, first.
Water, food, comfortable
workspace (I use a padded,
armless chair), and potty
breaks are all important. I
always locate the nearest
restroom upon arriving at the
gig. I once had a wannabe
“agent” tell me that I must
stand for the whole gig,
which was four hours long.
I prefer to sit. That brings
me closer to eye level with
the kids. I am 6 feet tall, and
about 400 lbs. Looming over
the kids makes them wonder
if you will swallow them
whole, or just take a little
bite! Bottom line - if I am not
comfortable, how can I make
the guests feel welcome?
There is nothing worse than a
grumpy entertainer!
Be sure that you have
enough supplies to complete
the job. Bring business cards.
(Editor’s Note: if working
to page 13
“Done correctly, you
will meet some of
the happiest, most
considerate people
in the world. It
goes without saying
you must have a
good product to be
successful at this.”
Line Work
from page 11
for an agent, check to see if
you need to hand out their
cards instead of your own.
If they booked you, they can
make that request). Mentally
prepare to be interviewed
by the media. Ask the client
about having people help
handle your line keeping it
orderly, and cutting it off
when necessary. Sometimes
you are the only one doing
this. Sometimes the people
who are assigned to help you
vanish! Plan for the worst,
hope for the best, and expect
something in between.
Now for the most
important part. Your main
focus in a line work gig is not
to paint faces, do balloons,
or hand out whatever! Your
main focus is to provide
the guests with a favorable,
memorable experience!
Your method of doing this
is the balloons, face art, free
stuff, etc. Plus, and this is
important, be entertaining.
Do not accept a line work gig
unless you have about five
minutes of material to keep
the onlookers from being
bored. You do not have to be
a Steve Martin, or a Jackie
Gleason. Just be interesting.
A bored line gets to be an
angry line really quickly!
You must keep your line
in order. There are several
strategies: use rope partitions,
a number machine, hand out
playing cards and call them in
one by one, or get someone
else to help you. Most of the
time, I handle this by myself.
It’s hard, but I get paid well
for what I do, and it’s fun! I
have in the trunk of my car, a
runner rug, about 8 feet long.
I set it on the ground in front
of my station, and let people
know that the front of the
line must stay on the carpet.
This strategy tends to funnel
people right to you. It works
for me.
Time passes, your line
is flowing smoothly, you
manage a potty break when
you must, and it comes time
to close down. This is the
hardest part! People do not
like being told no! But you
have to go. There are many
reasons: you have another
gig, the money stops and so
do you, you must meet the
spouse for a bowling date,
whatever. I judge how fast
my line is moving. I figure
out how long it takes for
the last person in line to
get to me. I do this before
I must shut the line off.
The last person in line gets
a fluorescent yellow vest
to wear that says in both
English and Spanish the
line is closed. I promise the
wearer something special,
and say if they let anyone in
line in front of them, I will
not be able to give them this
really neat thing I have in
mind for them!
I have tried signs on
the ground, closed circles,
and a lot of other things.
The vest works best for
me. I also make frequent
announcements for all to
hear, telling people that I am
leaving at such and such a
time. I once turned off a 45
minute line, just by having
the last person wear the
vest. No announcements, no
nothing, just the vest. How
cool is that!
Try to have an overtime
policy in place with the event
coordinator. If the person
who hired you is against
overtime, fine. If they are for
it, get their approval before
you cut off the line. Find out
specifically whose approval
you will need. Do that before
the gig starts. Sometimes,
if you have a long line, the
event person will authorize
you to stay.
And most of all - keep a
great attitude and
have fun! u
Chris Herrman
Chris Herrman passed away of
a heart attack suddenly.
Chris and and his wife, Cindy,
are past members of Rose City
Clown Alley.
He was a huge
part of our alley
and helped
tremendously
with our
1994 COAI
Convention here
in Portland.
Because of their excellent
computer skills, Chris and Cindy
designed a program for COAI and
have been running the competition
computer programs ever since.
They have been a mainstay and
integral part of the international
conventions for all these years.
Chris and Cindy both worked
at Intel for many years. Chris
branched out into his own
business a few years ago. Chris
was very active in his church
and he and Cindy hosted weekly
prayer and study groups at their
home. Chris loved to work with
wood and created incredible
custom pieces.
Chris and Cindy never had
any children, so they were just
like two big kids themselves.
Halloween was their favorite time
of the year and they went all out
with their decorations. They had
life-sized skeletons (that Chris
built) in cages hanging from their
front porch, along with torches of
fire. It was an amazing job they
did every year.
They really loved anything
to do with Disney and went on
a lot of cruises....all of them
through Disney. They even spent
Christmas on a Disney cruise last
year.
I lost a dear friend and the
entertainment world lost an
awesome, dedicated professional
showman who passed into the
light of God on Feb 26, 2009.
Ken started his professional
career as a juggler/unicyclist
at age 14. Prior to this he was
training to be a flyer/aerialist. Due
to an injury, he decided to venture
into juggling. Ken performed
in many countries and on cruise
ships. He appeared on television
on the Bozo Show in Chicago,
New York, Boston, and in a 1967
NBC Christmas show from Radio
City Music Hall.
Entertaining mostly as himself,
he occasionally became “Sherbie”
the clown. He had a nightclub
act and was a specialty event
performer and veteran circus
performer. He had the honor of
working and touring with many
of the biggest names in show
business.
In the 1950s he served in
the Army and was assigned to
USO shows. Ken was a past
member of AFTRA, IJA, and
national clown organizations.
Thank you Ken for your
friendship over the years. You
were a true friend and a wonderful
entertainer. I will miss you a lot.
her last walkaround
on Aug
6, 2008. Valerie
went home to
be with her
Lord during
National Clown Week.
Valerie started clowning in
1982, at Ft. Monmouth, NJ where
she attended a Christian clown
workshop. “Kisses” was born.
There she met a couple and they
became friends. The three of them
started the “Masters Clowns” of
Ft. Monmouth. They brought the
Good News of God's word and
His love for them to churches,
hospitals, nursing homes, and
Sunday schools. Their style of
clowning was mime, which is
done silently.
Over time people asked
“Kisses” if she would do birthday
parties. With her magic, balloon
sculptures, story telling, and
face painting she entertained
“children” from ages 1 to 99 with
much love and laughter.
Valerie met her husband John,
while country line dancing. It was
love at first sight, and when she
introduced him to clowning it was
obvious they made a great team.
They owned and operated the very
successful entertainment company
Dove Productions.
They moved to Maryland, and
after settling in, they started a
caring clown alley at the hospital
where John worked. They
conducted several clown colleges
to help new Joeys in the art of
clowning. She has given much
advice and love to new clowns as
well as seasoned clowns. Valerie’s
greatest joy was to share the love
of Jesus through clowning. The
loss of Kisses to the clown world
has left a void, but we know she is
in the arms of Jesus.
Kisses, we will miss you “Gone
but not forgotten.”
Bonnie “Sunshine” Stedman
took her last walk around on
March 27, 2009 after a tragic
accident at
her home. She
was a member
of Central
Massachusetts
Clown Alley
232.
She was a
former club
secretary and served as the
sergeant at arms for many years.
Her enthusiasm and zest for life
was contagious! She was one
of the most up-beat and happy
person. She was never without a
smile and a positive thing to say.
She was a clown amongst clowns
and possessed a keen ability to
connect with all the children she
entertained. A child didn't come
away from “Sunshine” without a
giggle or a smile.
Bonnie took her name,
“Sunshine” the Clown from her
involvement with Camp Sunshine
in Maine, a camp for children
facing critical illnesses.
She was a tremendous
balloonist and loved decorating
for large events through her
business “Balloon Creations by
Sunshine.”
Sunshine’s clown alley was
privileged to take part in her
memorial service attending in
our best clown attire for our
dear friend. “Clarity” the Clown
offered the Clown Prayer as her
alley laid balloon flowers on the
altar in Sunshine's honor.
It’s hard to image our alley
ever being the same without her.
She will be so sorely missed
by all of us. There will be a
vacant seat at our meetings only
she could fill. She'll be with us
always in our clown hearts, never
to be forgotten.
Submitted by friends of Dapper
After a few years of failing
health, Vito answered the call
of the Big Circus in the Sky on
Feb 16, 2009. “Dapper” was well
known in the Midwest as well
as around the country for his
knowledge of balloons. We all
considered him one of the better
balloonists. He
had the awards
to prove it.
Mention
the word at
any clown
gathering of a
balloon jam,
and he was
there - often into the wee hours of
the night.
He worked for the city of
Chicago for over 30 years. After
serving four years in the Marine
Corp, and the Korean conflict,
he found he had the talent of
training dogs as well as showing
them. At that time he also found
his great passion for clowning.
He was a member of COAI,
Mid-West Clown Association,
OOP Clown Alley #15, Niarome
Clown Troupe, and the Metro
Clown Guild of Chicago. Being a
member of various organizations
he found that volunteering was
what he wanted to do.
Two of the most frequent
special events he would do was
for Lambs Farm, a home for
mentally handicapped adults
and Misericordia, a home for
handicapped children and
disabled adults. He also loved
parades.
Those of us who knew him
well are going to miss him.
John McConnell Master Clown
John McConnell professionally
known as “Buster” the clown
died Dec 17,
2008 after a
long battle with
cancer. He was
62.
McConnell
began his
career as a
whiteface
clown similar to Bozo, then later
branched out portraying a downand-out
tramp clown. His recent
interpretation was of an Auguste
clown, or one constantly pulling
pranks.
He will fondly be remembered
as the bumbling Herb the
Magician who appeared with
only half a mustache, the result of
another one of his tricks that had
backfired.
Last October, he received a
Lifetime Achievement Award
from the Midwest Clown
Association. What an honor to
reach a pinnacle in his profession
in front of several hundred
peers at the convention in
Oconomowoc, WI.
“Buster” appeared at many
local venues. He was very
innovative, especially with his
balloons, face painting and
magic. He was a great hit with
the children at the Streamwood
Park District preschool fun fair,
where he arrived with several
tricks up his sleeve from rabbits
to scarves to magic wands. His
opening line to the kids was,
“Want a can of Pringles?” They
would yell “yes” and he'd say,
“later.” Once he finished his act
he would open the can of Pringles
and a cloth snake jumped out.
The children would howl with
laughter.
John McConnell will be
remembered as a “great master
clown.”
Convention
Report
by Pat Roeser
Director of Conventions
They were off and running
from the start at the 24 th
Annual COAI Convention
in Clarksville, IN. Preregistration
was a mere 122.
However, over 70 people
signed up at the door. Many
thanks to the InKy Clowns
for the hard work that went
into making this a very
successful convention.
The convention was funfilled
with a lot of downhome
flavor. The Kentucky
Derby theme party was a big
sensation! Attendees wore
hat creations they brought
or could make right on
the spot. Competition was
fierce! Every table could be
personally decorated with the
theme and voted on with a
ballot found in the program
book. A couple of Colonel
Sanders type characters
showed up as well as ladies
in formal attire. The DJ had a
scavenger hunt and confused
folks when told to find
Hawaiian currency which is
actually the same as we use
on the continental US! There
were also opportunities to be
photographed as a jockey or
wearing a wreath of roses.
Almost 40 people took the
side trip to Churchill Downs.
Our guide Gene, who has
been at the track for over 50
years, enhanced
the tour with his knowledge
and wit. We dined on the
edge of the track with horses
and riders coming right up
to us. The museum was very
interesting with a great movie
presentation of Churchill
Downs’ history.
Check out www.YouTube.
com on the Internet and in the
search area put in COAI THE
SONG. New board member
Glenn Kohlberger wrote new
words to YMCA. The COAI
Board performed “The Song”
during the dealers' show.
Attendees participated at the
show and again at the theme
party when the DJ played the
YMCA song.
After the awards' banquet,
people disappeared to check
out their score sheets and
pack. Sunday was the hardest
day as everyone left. There
was lots of hugging and
good-byes. We hope to see
you all next year!
Next year? That comes
up real fast so start saving
up those pennies, nickels,
dimes, and quarters. We need
to meet in Houston, TX for
A Little Bit Country/A Little
Bit of Rock ’n’ Roll. Their
convention runs April 20-
25, 2010. Watch for more in
upcoming issues of The New
the Kansas City parade. The Northland Clown Guild Alley
and happiness to everyone since 1991.
When the famous Doctor “Clown,” Dr. Patch Adams (left)
visited Saint Barnabas Health Care System in Livingston
NJ, he did not expect to meet Julius “Clown Chips” Carallo
(right) who is a popular clown performer and long time
member of COAI Alley #51, Merri Makers.
Adams was invited to conduct a Ground Rounds and
humanities/humanism program for resident doctors. Later
that evening Adams spoke on “Living A Life of Joy”
to invited guests at the center. Adams is nationally and
internationally known for his writing and presentations on
wellness, laughter and humor as well as on health care and
health care systems.
CRCAF Goes On The Road
With the help of the NORCO Clowns, CRCAF
members and COAI International Ambassadors George
Mudd, Roy Sandburg, Michael Blaine, Gerald Boprey,
John Edwards, Nicholas Edwards, Dyann Giles, Gavin
Giles, and Andy Mullin, Fuddi-Duddy a.k.a. Paul
Kleinberger took the Clown Arts Festival north to
Montreal, Quebec on March 22. The purpose of the trip
was a parade appearance and some cross border promotion
of the clown arts. Upon their arrival in Montreal, these
clowns joined forces with Montreal’s Karnak Clowns.
Together they appeared in the annual St Patrick’s Day
Parade. Montreal’s St. Patrick’s Day celebration is
supposedly the longest running celebration in North
America, claiming roots back to 1759. Locals claim
the parade has been an annual event since 1824. We
don’t know about that! We do know that the contingent
of clowns entertained the thousands upon thousands of
people along the streets of Montreal who expressed their
love of clowns with great enthusiasm! Crowd estimates
exceeded 500,000 people. Many friendships were
made. The CRCAF Clowns and the Karnak Clowns now
have several other cross border events and exchanges on
the drawing board.
Submitted by Paul “Fuddi-Duddy” Kleinberger
Parade Season is coming and this is a reminder of the
fun, that Alley #313 had last year. The theme was “Proud
to be an American” and our banner said, “Proud to be
an American --Proud to be a Clown.” We had fun making
all the children young and old smile. This year’s theme is
“Trust in God.” I can't wait to see what we can come up
with this year.
The Bricktown Clowns recently
participated in the 2009 edition of
the OKC St. Patty's Day Parade in
downtown Oklahoma City.
They were the “Genuine Irish
Sitters” complete with little sitting
stools! The crowd LOVED them
and they had loads of fun!!
On a recent trip to the Dominican Republic I was asked to go into one of the schools in Puerto Plata and entertain the
children. As I got out of the cab I was greeted by many of the children who were coming from or going to a class. After meeting
the superintendent of schools, the principal, and the class teacher I was taken to a small auditorium where 40 children were
waiting for me. They were told to be on their best behavior - and they were! The hotel where I was staying had distributed
balloons to the children. I put clown noses on the entire staff and all of the children.
Entertaining was a little more difficult as I don’t speak
Spanish. I had brought a friend with me who helped by
doing the translations for my show. Many of the children
had never seen a clown before, so they were delighted. I
think I had more fun than they did - if that’s possible.
I’ve been invited back. I would like to ask the
readers of The New Calliope if they have any ideas
or suggestions for working with this group. I would
appreciate it! (As a reward for doing this, I was asked by
one of the tourists in the hotel if I would do a birthday
party for one of the guests - and you know how I
answered that!)
Congratulations to Bruce “Koo Koo” Jordan for
being presented with the coveted International
Brotherhood of Magicians (IBM) designation, “The
Order
of Merlin - Excalibur.” Bruce has been a member of
IBM for 50 years.
In December the clowns in Barbados got together to spread
some special cheer to the HIV Food Bank of the Ministry of
Health. “Annie” of Barbados spear-headed a food drive for the
food bank to help children with HIV and AIDS. The clowns and
volunteers worked from 2:30 to 9pm collecting food. Instead of
collecting money for balloons, the clowns were paid with food
items. Since they were near a supermarket it was easy for people
to pick up some food and come back to “purchase” their balloon.
The seven clowns collected 700 food items while creating
balloons and handing out stickers. Annie said, “The day after the
event, it felt so good to be a clown. We had fun together and we
did something for someone else.”
Junior Joeys Convention 2009
Wow! That is the only word I can use to
describe the fun we had with the junior joey
class sessions!
This year there
were five students
willing to learn
and grow in their
clowning experience.
We started with
introductions and
then quickly moved
on with skit practice.
“Glitter Sniff,” “Boo
Boo,” “Hippie,”
“Glee” and “Sparkle”
had their own ideas
for skits and were
quickly integrated
into the skit schedule.
After watching the
make-up competition,
the juniors fine-tuned
their make-up with
the help of teachers,
Cheri Venturi, Pat
Roeser, and Toni
Dufrene. Later
that afternoon Dan
Langwell, with the
help of John Kral,
had the juniors
inflating and creating
different balloon sculptures.
On to the next day and more skit practice
and then Angel Morales’ Latin Birthday
Party class. Angel had the juniors playing
so many games that their heads were
spinning! What a great way to learn about
another clowning culture!
Friday's giant balloon contest had the
juniors showing their creativity with a
balloon crane, a balloon fish, a lady balloon,
and other silly creations.
Connie Lyons had the juniors doing
an “Ants in the Pants” craft and Dawn
Pearson taught the many ways of clown
characterization and performance. Steve
Kissell's class gave the juniors some ideas
for party games.
As always, the juniors were swept away
as face painting models. They just have that
perfect “canvas”!
During group skit, the children showed
some of their skills while they performed
several of their skits between breaks.
Time for the “Showcase” and Red Nose
Critique. It was so much fun to watch the
children as they performed their skits and
jokes for the Red Nose
coaches! At the banquet, the
juniors walked away with
several well-deserved silver
and gold awards. Each
Junior Joey also received
a $25 scholarship from the
Scholarship Fund.
I would like to thank
Steve Long for literally
supplying the shirt off his
back and the props for
several of the junior skits
and coaching for the Red
Nose Critique along with
Red Nose coaches, Angel
Morales and Richard Smith.
I would also like to thank all
the instructors and helpers:
Bridgette White for her
dedication to always being
there when I need her and
being my right hand; to
Cheri Venturi, Toni Dufrene,
Pat Roeser, Dawn Pearson,
John Kral, Dan Langwell,
Angel Morales,
and Steve
Kissell.
Thank you to Bill LaBlanc
for setting up the coaching
for the Red Nose Critique
and thank you to the InKy
Clown Alley for making
sure there was a dedicated
room for the duration of
the Junior Joey convention
classes. Finally, I would
like to give a special “thank
you” to all the mentors,
parents, and grandparents
who took the time to
bring their junior joeys
and BIG thank you to the
junior joeys themselves.
Their participation and
enthusiasm proves we are
truly keeping the clowning
future alive and well! u
Face Painting: Flowers
with Marcela Murad
It's all about color, color, and more color. Split
cakes are making a splash this summer in the face
painting world. They are combinations of paint
packed in a small box that allows the painter to
apply many colors at once - sometimes up to six in
one stroke!
You can create beautiful and colorful designs
in a fraction of the time that blending individually
normally takes. When
moving the line at a fast
pace is necessary, this
technique can add the
speed required.
The method to using
the cakes is similar to
the well know Donna
Dewberry One Stroke
Painting as it modifies
some of the techniques
for applying with using
water-based paints versus
cream acrylics. The
results are stunning on
the face and also work
great for body painting
designs.
Rainbow cakes are
also the making waves.
Rainbow cakes are
several colors packaged
in a large container, that
makes it fast and easy to
apply up to five colors
to the face using one
sponge and application.
Rainbow cakes are great
to speed up full face
designs, and allow you to
cover large areas quickly and colorfully.
The designs on these pages were created and
painted by Heather Banks, owner of Silly Farm
Supplies, and her aunt Marcela “Mama Clown”
Murad.
Other Flower Ideas...
Load your brush in a forward and backward motion so you are
retrieving the same colors on both sides of the brush.
With the brush flat on the skin and using the darker color to
lead, make a circular motion with the brush.
Continue making circles
around the face. The flower's
buds are done with one
sweep of the brush.
Load your brush using the split
cake combination of black,
dark green, light green, and
yellow. Paint the leaves using an
upward flick stroke.
See Opposite Page for Final Result!
Outline the design with white. To finish add lipstick, teardrops,
and a few detail dots.
Catch Me If You Can!
Skill Level: Intermediate
Feature by Ann “Tuttles” Sanders
Photographs by Tim “Sawdust” Laynor
Props: Metal ring and beaded chain style necklace
Bob “Bunky” Gretton, COAI 2009 Clown of the Year,
counts this trick among his favorite bits for walk around
entertainment. It takes practice to master the technique but
the results are nothing short of amazing!
Start by holding the
ring between your
index finger and
thumb.
Spread the chain
over your thumb and
middle finger.
Release your thumb
and allow the ring
to drop.
The ring will
magically attach
itself to the chain!
Per Bob, “When learning how to do the drop, stand next to a
bed. That way if the trick does not work, you don’t have to bend
over to pick the ring off the floor.”
This trick, along with wide range of walk around entertainment,
is available from a number of the wonderful merchants that
advertise in The New Calliope. Please support the vendors that
support COAI!
Place the bottom
portion of the chain
through the ring.
Continue to hold the
ring and chain in
the fashion shown
here.
Note from Ann: Since Bob showed us this routine, we've
been experimenting with a variety of chains and rings. We've
made a 3” diameter ring attach itself to a 60” round shoe string!
The fun part, for the performer, is finding rings and chains that
will work together. The key to success is dropping the ring so
that the bottom of the ring goes through the loop formed by the
chain.
If you have problems getting the ring to attach to the chain,
try keeping the top of the chain spread apart as far as you can
and, when you release the ring, give it a downward push.
I'd be interested to hear what patter you can come up with to
use when performing this routine!
AMBASSADORS
APPOINTED
by Paul Kleinberger
We have heard a lot about
International Ambassadors this year.
We've seen the photos and read the
reports. But, what is the program all
about ?
The ultimate purpose of the
International Ambassador program is to
raise COAI’s organizational profile in
the international clown community and
increase our international membership.
A very important subordinate effort is to
spread far and wide the smirks, smiles,
giggles, laughter, history, and traditions
of the art of clowning while fostering
goodwill within the clown community
and in the family of man at large.
How does COAI do that? We appoint
International Ambassadors. They are
COAI members of all ages and in good
standing who are traveling, meeting with
clowns in the countries they visit and
sharing their skills and talents, as well
as information about COAI.
So, if you are traveling and willing
to volunteer your time and enthusiasm,
you will experience an opportunity of a
lifetime. The smiles are amazing and the
laughter contagious!
You will be able to meet and
exchange clown skills with your fellow
joeys in their homeland, as well as share
the art form, its history, traditions, and
of course lots of smiles with interested
people. You will have the opportunity to
learn about the clown arts of the country
you are visiting, too. International
Ambassadors report having had their
eyes opened and their horizons expanded
by their experiences and exchanges.
Many friendships have been made.
As part of your departure plans,
contact the COAI International
Ambassador Chairperson. He will assist
you as you contact the embassy of the
country you are going to visit. Together
you will be able to attain as many names
as possible of clowns in the area you are
visiting, along with the surrounding area
when available.
You will then assemble a personalized
informational packet to share with all the
clowns you meet.
QUALIFICATIONS...to be a COAI
International Ambassador:
You should be a member in good
standing of COAI.
You should be able to communicate
in the country you are visiting either by
knowledge of their language or through
and interpreter.
You must be willing to make the visit
at your own expense.
You should meet the other clowns
and exchange clowning information and
skills.
You must be willing to work closely
with the International Ambassador
Chairperson.
You must make a written report with
pictures upon your return and submit it
to The New Calliope.
If you have personal travel plans that
include departing the borders of your
home country of residence and traveling
to countries far from or close to home,
consider volunteering to be a COAI
International Ambassador.
Competition
by Cathy Mackey
Competition Chairman
Thank you, thank you, thank you! This
year was again very successful in the
competition arena! However, I could not
have done it without the following people:
Host Alley - If it were not for the
host alleys we would not have these
competitions and help further clowns in
their education.
Competitors - You are why my team
does what it does. We hope you learned
from your competitions and made new
friends. If you have any suggestions please
get them to me so I can make next year
even better. You were all very patient with
me this year and I appreciate it.
Judges - You are always there for
me, willing to step in at any time. Your
knowledge in judging has furthered the
lives of the competitors and made them
better at their craft, as well as keeping me
on track!
Board - You support me in this position
which I am very grateful for. I love being
a part of the competitions and helping
see others grow. Glenn, your outstanding
work this year on the scoring program is
something I can never thank you enough
for. Without it we would have been lost.
Team - That is what we are - a team and
the competitions are as good as they are
because of hard work. This year they had
to come together even more and we have
learned to respect what goes on behind the
scenes. The missing people from the team
can't be forgotten, Karen, Cindy and most
of all Chris. You were all missed. The team
now knows what all of you do behind the
scenes and I can't thank you enough. Until
you walk in another person’s shoes you do
not realize their value. We all learned your
value not only for the competitions but your
contributions to the art of clowning.
Thank you. u
A Little Bit of Chaos
by Dan Langwell
Midwest Regional VP
Do you have a bit of
chaos in your life? It is easy
to spread yourself too thin
these days. We have plenty
of demands on our time. Our
family and their needs are at
the top of the list, as is the
regular 9 to 5 job. But, what
is really amazing is how
the relatively unimportant
demands squeeze out the truly
important ones. Morning
devotions get cut because of
that appointment at the gym. A
bit of quality one-on-one time
with your kids is pre-empted
by a mailbox full of spam.
A special moment with your
significant other is cut short by
a telemarketer.
I spent March trying to
work on long-term projects
but finding myself waylaid
into the dark alleys of short
term fires that “needed” to
be dealt with. Phone calls,
emails, a “well-deserved”
break that lasts way too long
and accomplishes nothing of
lasting value; that innocent
looking link that leads you
on a merry goose chase
around the Internet. There is
a book, a good old-fashioned
hardback, paper-paged book
titled The Power of Less, by
Leo Babauta that I wholeheartedly
recommend. As you
might guess from the title,
it is about simplifying your
life and focusing on what is
important to you to help you
advance towards your goals.
Now, I won’t pretend this is
a miracle book. I have way
too many plates in the air to
suddenly have an organized
life. But the ideas presented
resonate and have helped me
to pause, and sometimes even
say “No” before picking up
a new project and adding it
to my “to do” list. Hopefully,
over time we all will be able
to accomplish more of the
important things, less of the
nonessential, and not be as
stressed in the process.
For the business side of life,
start by looking at the way
you keep track of information
and start thinking about ways
to improve your organization
methods. One very useful
technique is making “to do”
lists. That may not seem
like such an important start
but it can be very helpful in
identifying some of the more
important tasks ahead of
you. As life gets busier and
busier, it becomes tougher
and tougher to keep track of
what needs to be done when.
Without a list (and even with
it some days) the end of the
day comes and we all wonder
where the time went and what
was accomplished.
It has been suggested
that at first you start by just
jotting down broad ideas, for
example: 1) clean clown room.
Then break each project into
more manageable pieces so
that at the end of the day you
can see a number of marks
on your list where tasks have
been completed. Interruptions
still come, some are welcome,
like that phone call for the last
minute gig they are willing to
pay extra for, and some are not
(I wasn’t planning
on needing to buy
a new refrigerator
today), but no matter what
happens we have a list of
goals and some semblance
of a pathway to accomplish
them. Right now I am getting
ready to cross off number
four: “Write article for The
New Calliope.” DONE. u
COAI INTERNATIONAL
CONVENTION
Houston, TX
MORE INFO TO FOLLOW!!
Int'l Clown Week
Down To The Wire
By: Barbara Waters-Riddle,
Clown Week Chairperson
Ideas for logging your events
during International Clown
Week!
Scrap booking is a great way
to keep a record of your International
Clown Week activities.
The cover would have the date
and I.D. of the alley or individual.
The inside cover could
have pertinent information, such
as name, membership list (those
who participate), and COAI
numbers. The following could
have your schedule for the
week, with time, location and
contact. Follow this with your
proclamations, media letters and
finally your photos (action vs.
posed). Don’t be afraid to ask
for some type of documentation,
thank you or evaluation of
your appearance. All these documents
log your International
Clown Week activities.
This could be a fun project
for an alley, if the alley or
majority of participants get
together before and after that
week. Sometimes all you need
is a THANK YOU PARTY.
The C.H.A.R.L.I.E. Award is
such an honor for the winners,
alley or individual. But what a
way to document your clowning
activities.
Here are some ideas of
places you can visit: nursing
facilities, shopping malls, day
care centers, camps, grocery
stores, or any place that has
people. Here is a new and novel
idea – how about
a Poker Run only
change the name
to a “Clown Run.” Need more
information about a Clown
Run? Just write (2800 Kiskadee
Drive, Englewood FL 34224),
call (941-468-6762), or e-mail
(BTnuzzles@aol.com) me and
I will forward you the information.
Oh! Don’t forget the
workplace. Last year COAI
implemented wearing your
clown shoes or part of a costume
(nose, tie, shirt) to work.
Some of the photos in The New
Calliope were great.
Now that you have officially
gathered your Clown Week
information, why not send it in
for the C.H.A.R.L.I.E. Award?!
How do they judge this category?
Easy. There is an evaluation
form that is filled out for each
entry in the two categories. The
committee looks for a number
of proclamations, list of members
with COAI number or individual
information, newspaper
articles, press releases, event information
to the public, pictures
(posed vs. action, clowns with
audience, promotional depiction
of International Clown Week),
contents of materials sent (creativity/originality,
arrangement/
organization, and quality).
I look forward to hearing
from your alleys or receiving
individual entries for the
2009 C.H.A.R.L.I.E. Award.
Have Fun and let’s all celebrate
INTERNATIONAL CLOWN
WEEK 2009. u
The New Calliope Convention Issue

There are many variations of a princess
crown and I would like to give credit but I don’t
remember where I originally picked this up.
When I am twisting I measure my bubbles
using the width of my hand and fingers. To
make this easier I have measured the bubbles so
you can adapt as needed.
Both the balloon for the base of the crown,
and the one for the points of the crown, should
have an uninflated “tail” roughly four inches
long.
The third balloon is the one used for the
jewels on the crown. Leaving a seven inch tail
works well.
For the first balloon I
use a pink 260. Starting
at the knot end twist a
1 ½”bubble and then
ear twist. Follow the
ear twist with a 4”
bubble. Repeat the ear
twist followed by the 4”
bubble twice more.
Now add one more
ear twist for a total
of four ear twists
alternating with three
4” bubbles. This will be
the front of the crown.
1
2
3
The second balloon is purple. Tie into the
hat base at one of the end ear twists.
5
Measure the child's
head. Tie in to the first
ear twist and discard the
extra.
Divide the large rear
bubble so the overall
balloon looks like a
diamond. This also
helps the hat to fit better
on the child’s head.
When the parents are
watching I will usually
joke at this point. I
show the balloon to the
family and tell the child
to remember that shape
when their father starts
letting them date when
they turn 40. Sounds
rather simple but it
produces a double laugh
from the parents.
4
Twist a 4” bubble followed by a 1 ½” ear
twist. (Notice how so many of my bubbles are the
same size. It becomes very quick for line work,
because I am not trying to remember which
sculpture has which size ear twists, they are all
pretty uniform in size.)
Twist another 4” bubble and wrap around the
second ear twist of the hat base.
Twist a 5” or 6” bubble (try and
keep this bubble about the same length
as the peak of the first “point” on the
crown; 4” plus the ear twist.
Follow by a 1 ½” ear twist and a
second 5” to 6”bubble.
Wrap around the third ear twist on
the hat base.
The remainder of the balloon should
be just long enough for you to match
the first point of the crown. A 4”
bubble, 1 ½” ear twist, one more 4”
bubble, with just enough left over for
a 1”to 1 ½”bubble that you will wrap
around the 4 th and last ear twist.
Page 58
Balloons: Princess Crown
by Dan Langwell
6
The last balloon is clear or could be a
light white.
Tie into the first ear twist on the hat
base. Do not start with an ear twist, just
wrap the nozzle around the bubbles.
Proceed to twist three bubbles roughly 1
½” round. Connect to the ear twist on top
of the first point of the crown.
Now twist five 1 ½” bubbles and connect to the ear twist
in the center of the middle point. Twist another five 1 ½”
bubbles and twist around top of the remaining point of the
crown.
7
Twist three 1 ½” bubbles and connect to the ear twist on
the hat base. Tie and discard the remainder and present the
Princess with her crown. (Modeled here by New Calliope
Editor, Pat Newton).
A Final Word from the Editor
Everyone has made it
home safe and sound and has
started to recuperate from this
year's Convention. Tom and
I have been working around
the clock weeding through
literally thousands of photos
to bring you this annual convention
issue. We hope you
enjoy it!
We would like to express
a huge spoonful of gratitude
to the competitors. There are
pages filled with winners in
the top ten of the various offerings.
These pictures are
a wonderful inspiration to
anyone who is working on
honing either their skills in
balloons and face painting or
looking to perhaps try a new
make-up style. I have always
found wonderful ideas for
costuming. I love looking at
how everyone takes such care
in creating a “look” complete
with color choices and
textures to suit their clown
persona.
Our next issue is our big
kick off to celebrating 25
years of COAI. We have
been busy doing interviews,
collecting old copies of The
New Calliope and believe it
or not, actually finding some
cool pictures. We will have
pages dedicated to the history
of our organization in every
issue from July/August 2009
through the convention issue
in May/June 2010.
For the past year we have
been working on a new logo.
There was a motion from
the floor at the convention in
2007 asking to have a new
logo developed. We had some
wonderful bids and ideas presented
to the board at which
time they did choose a fabulous
design that was created
by Marcela Murad and Adam
McBride. We have worked
hard over the last few years
with some minor tweaking
of the logo to make it perfect
but ran into a problem. When
presented to our legal advisors,
it was deemed the logo
had too many similarities to
some other ones now in existence.
Adorable characters
with red noses are abundant
in the clown world. At this
point in time, it has been decided
to remain with our existing
COAI logo and revisit
this at a future date.
I also wish to remind you
to renew your membership!!!
Everyone's membership
expires on June 30, so it's
important for you to get your
renewal in so you don't miss
a single New Calliope.
Enjoy! u
