when ANA-<strong>Michigan</strong> and ANA together speak<br />

enable pr<strong>of</strong>essional nurses to flourish and practice at<br />

the top <strong>of</strong> their license and education. <strong>The</strong> grow<strong>in</strong>g<br />

threat <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g violence <strong>in</strong> the work sett<strong>in</strong>g, the<br />

opioid epidemic, and pr<strong>of</strong>essional bum-out are very<br />

real threats to our pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>in</strong>ternally. Externally,<br />

health care and health care reform have never been<br />

more fragmented and tenuous. Our communities<br />

are yearn<strong>in</strong>g for better ways to prevent illness,<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ta<strong>in</strong> health and navigate their health and<br />

illness care successfully and <strong>in</strong> susta<strong>in</strong>able ways.<br />

<strong>The</strong> prevention <strong>of</strong> illness, the ma<strong>in</strong>tenance <strong>of</strong> health<br />

and the coord<strong>in</strong>ation <strong>of</strong> care have always been the<br />

hallmarks <strong>of</strong> nurs<strong>in</strong>g science so there is no better<br />

time than now to come together as pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

nurses, jo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g our communities to co-create new<br />

models <strong>of</strong> health care. For much <strong>of</strong> our history we<br />

have practiced <strong>in</strong> the shadow <strong>of</strong> others and this is<br />

the time to demonstrate the significant impact <strong>of</strong><br />

nurs<strong>in</strong>g care and health care to society.<br />

“Dur<strong>in</strong>g the last 20 years <strong>of</strong> my career, I have<br />

focused on br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g thousands <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

nurses together to cocreate a strong and<br />

empowered pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice environment, by<br />

engag<strong>in</strong>g our patients, families, and colleagues <strong>in</strong><br />

all the processes we created. This work was done<br />

with<strong>in</strong> our organization and <strong>in</strong>fluenced the nurs<strong>in</strong>g<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>ession at-large through our nurses’ practice and<br />

scholarship. I am now seek<strong>in</strong>g to serve the nurs<strong>in</strong>g<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>in</strong> a much broader and more impactful<br />

way by serv<strong>in</strong>g as the President-Elect. In this role,<br />

I am confident that I can jo<strong>in</strong> the other leaders <strong>of</strong><br />

communities we serve to co-create better and more<br />

susta<strong>in</strong>able models <strong>of</strong> health care.”<br />

What activities are you currently <strong>in</strong>volved with<br />

or have been <strong>in</strong> the past related to ANA or ANA-<br />

<strong>Michigan</strong>? (<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g Region or Council <strong>in</strong>volvement)<br />

I have been a member <strong>of</strong> the ANA s<strong>in</strong>ce I<br />

graduated <strong>in</strong> 1978 but have not been <strong>in</strong>volved<br />

<strong>in</strong> any specific ANA committees. When the<br />

Washtenaw-Liv<strong>in</strong>gston-Monroe District Nurses<br />

Association existed, I was a member <strong>of</strong> the Board<br />

<strong>of</strong> Directors and was the Chair <strong>of</strong> the MNA Cab<strong>in</strong>et<br />

on Adm<strong>in</strong>istration and Education and an MNA<br />

delegate <strong>in</strong> the early to mid-1990’s.<br />

What other pr<strong>of</strong>essional organizations are you<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong>?<br />

I am actively <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the Rho Chapter <strong>of</strong><br />

Sigma <strong>The</strong>ta Tau International, serv<strong>in</strong>g as the<br />

President-Elect, President, and Past-President<br />

from 2013 to 2017. I have also held positions on<br />

the Educational Committee for the American<br />

Association <strong>of</strong> Nurse Executives (AONE) from<br />

2013 to 2015. I have held Board positions on the<br />

University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Michigan</strong> Health System Board, the<br />

Washtenaw Community Health Organization<br />

(WCHO) Board and the <strong>Michigan</strong> Visit<strong>in</strong>g Nurses<br />

Association’s Board, serv<strong>in</strong>g as the Chair from<br />

2003 to 2007.<br />

What other elected or appo<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>of</strong>fices and<br />

community activities have you been <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong><br />

that would be relevant to this position?<br />

My elected positions are noted above. I recently<br />

had the privilege <strong>of</strong> serv<strong>in</strong>g as the Chief Nurse<br />

Executive <strong>of</strong> the University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Michigan</strong> Health<br />

System for the past 17 years, lead<strong>in</strong>g a pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

community <strong>of</strong> over 6000 Registered Nurses. I<br />

retired from that position <strong>in</strong> December 2017 and<br />

will beg<strong>in</strong> a new role at the University <strong>of</strong> <strong>Michigan</strong>,<br />

School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Nurs<strong>in</strong>g</strong> to br<strong>in</strong>g nurses together to cocreate<br />

<strong>in</strong>novative models <strong>of</strong> health care. <strong>The</strong>se<br />

experiences provide an important foundation for<br />

lead<strong>in</strong>g the pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>in</strong>to our future.<br />

“A key issue fac<strong>in</strong>g<br />

nurs<strong>in</strong>g is safe staff<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ratios. Solutions <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />

develop<strong>in</strong>g flexible staff<strong>in</strong>g<br />

ratios based on patient acuity to <strong>in</strong>novative ideas<br />

focused on reimbursement for nurs<strong>in</strong>g services.<br />

I would work with stakeholders to support the<br />

best solution for <strong>Michigan</strong>. Def<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g, protect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and advanc<strong>in</strong>g the scope <strong>of</strong> practice for all nurses<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>Michigan</strong>’s restrictive practice environment is<br />

another key issue. I would address this through<br />

legislative and regulatory means. Membership<br />

growth is essential. I would work with the<br />

organization to explore ways to engage and grow<br />

membership through strategies such as educational<br />

<strong>of</strong>fer<strong>in</strong>gs and topic focuses task forces.”<br />

“ANA-<strong>Michigan</strong>’s mission is to advance the nurs<strong>in</strong>g<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>in</strong> <strong>Michigan</strong>. I am passionate about the<br />

role <strong>of</strong> nurs<strong>in</strong>g and the importance <strong>of</strong> support<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and expand<strong>in</strong>g the scope <strong>of</strong> nurs<strong>in</strong>g practice.<br />

Nurses are the key to provid<strong>in</strong>g high-quality care<br />

for all <strong>in</strong>dividuals <strong>in</strong> <strong>Michigan</strong>. In order to do that<br />

we need a strong nurs<strong>in</strong>g organization to support<br />

the pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> nurs<strong>in</strong>g. My background and<br />

experience <strong>in</strong> health systems, outpatient cl<strong>in</strong>ics and<br />

academia provide me with the tools necessary to<br />

serve and provide leadership to the organization. I
