pleasure, and to be affected with those k<strong>in</strong>d and melt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

expressions wherewith <strong>the</strong>y court <strong>the</strong>ir Savior, till <strong>the</strong>y<br />

persuade <strong>the</strong>mselves <strong>the</strong>y are mightily <strong>in</strong> love with him,<br />

and from <strong>the</strong>nce assume a great confidence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

salvation, which <strong>the</strong>y esteem <strong>the</strong> chief <strong>of</strong> Christian<br />

graces. Thus are <strong>the</strong>se th<strong>in</strong>gs which have any<br />

resemblance <strong>of</strong> piety, and at <strong>the</strong> best are but means <strong>of</strong><br />

obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g it, or particular exercises <strong>of</strong> it, frequently<br />

mistaken for <strong>the</strong> whole <strong>of</strong> religion: nay, sometimes<br />

wickedness and vice pretend to that name. I speak not<br />

now <strong>of</strong> those gross impieties wherewith <strong>the</strong> Hea<strong>the</strong>ns<br />

were wont to worship <strong>the</strong>ir gods. <strong>The</strong>re are but too many<br />

Christians who would consecrate <strong>the</strong>ir vices, and follow<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir corrupt affections, whose ragged humor and sullen<br />

pride must pass for Christian severity; whose fierce<br />

wrath, and bitter rage aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong>ir enemies, must be<br />

called holy zeal; whose petulancy towards <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

superiors, or rebellion aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong>ir governors, must<br />

have <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Christian courage and resolution.<br />

But certa<strong>in</strong>ly religion is quite ano<strong>the</strong>r th<strong>in</strong>g, and <strong>the</strong>y<br />

who are acqua<strong>in</strong>ted with it will enterta<strong>in</strong> far different<br />

thoughts, and disda<strong>in</strong> all those shadows and false<br />

imitations <strong>of</strong> it. <strong>The</strong>y know <strong>by</strong> experience that true<br />

religion is a union <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> soul with <strong>God</strong>, a real<br />

participation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e nature, <strong>the</strong> very image <strong>of</strong> <strong>God</strong><br />
