were, to lose ourselves <strong>in</strong> him, and, be<strong>in</strong>g swallowed up<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> overcom<strong>in</strong>g sense <strong>of</strong> his goodness, to <strong>of</strong>fer<br />

ourselves a liv<strong>in</strong>g sacrifice, always ascend<strong>in</strong>g unto him<br />

<strong>in</strong> flames <strong>of</strong> love! Never doth a soul know what solid joy<br />

and substantial pleasure is, till once, be<strong>in</strong>g weary <strong>of</strong><br />

itself, it renounce all propriety, give itself up unto <strong>the</strong><br />

and devoted th<strong>in</strong>g, and can say, from an <strong>in</strong>ward sense<br />

and feel<strong>in</strong>g, "My beloved is m<strong>in</strong>e," (I account all his<br />

<strong>in</strong>terest m<strong>in</strong>e own,) "and I am his:" I am content to be<br />

any th<strong>in</strong>g for him, and care not for myself, but that I may<br />

serve him. A person, moulded <strong>in</strong>to this temper, would<br />

f<strong>in</strong>d pleasure <strong>in</strong> all <strong>the</strong> dispensations <strong>of</strong> Providence:<br />

temporal enjoyments would have ano<strong>the</strong>r relish, when<br />

he should taste <strong>the</strong> div<strong>in</strong>e goodness <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, and<br />

consider <strong>the</strong>m as tokens <strong>of</strong> love, sent <strong>by</strong> his dearest Lord<br />

and Maker: and chastisements, though <strong>the</strong>y be not<br />

joyous, but grievous, would here<strong>by</strong> lose <strong>the</strong>ir st<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong><br />

rod as well as <strong>the</strong> staff would comfort him: he would<br />

snatch a kiss from <strong>the</strong> hand that was smit<strong>in</strong>g him, and<br />

ga<strong>the</strong>r sweetness from that severity; nay, he would<br />

rejoice, that though <strong>God</strong> did not <strong>the</strong> will <strong>of</strong> such a<br />

worthless and foolish creature as himself, yet he did his<br />

own will, and accomplished his own designs, which are<br />

<strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>itely more holy and wise.<br />
