sort <strong>of</strong> prayer, as to supersede <strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r; for<br />

we have so many several th<strong>in</strong>gs to pray for, and every<br />

petition <strong>of</strong> this nature requires so much time, and so<br />

great an attention <strong>of</strong> spirit, that it were not easy <strong>the</strong>re<strong>in</strong><br />

to overtake <strong>the</strong>m all: to say noth<strong>in</strong>g, that <strong>the</strong> deep sighs<br />

and heav<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> heart, which are wont to accompany<br />

it, are someth<strong>in</strong>g oppressive to nature, and make it hard<br />

to cont<strong>in</strong>ue long <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>m. But certa<strong>in</strong>ly a few <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

<strong>in</strong>ward aspirations will do more than a great many<br />

fluent and melt<strong>in</strong>g expressions.<br />

Thus, my dear friend, I have briefly proposed <strong>the</strong><br />

method which I judge proper for mould<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> soul <strong>in</strong>to<br />

a holy frame; and <strong>the</strong> same means which serve to beget<br />

this div<strong>in</strong>e temper, must still be practiced for<br />

streng<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g and advanc<strong>in</strong>g it: and <strong>the</strong>refore I shall<br />

recommend but one more for that purpose, and it is <strong>the</strong><br />

frequent and conscientious use <strong>of</strong> that holy sacrament,<br />

which is peculiarly appo<strong>in</strong>ted to nourish and <strong>in</strong>crease<br />

spiritual life, when once it is begun <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> soul. All <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>struments <strong>of</strong> religion do meet toge<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> this<br />

ord<strong>in</strong>ance; and while we address ourselves unto it, we<br />

are put to practice all <strong>the</strong> rules which were mentioned<br />

before. <strong>The</strong>n it is that we make <strong>the</strong> severest survey <strong>of</strong> our<br />

actions, and lay <strong>the</strong> strictest obligations on ourselves;<br />

<strong>the</strong>n are our m<strong>in</strong>ds raised up to <strong>the</strong> highest contempt <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> world, and every grace doth exercise itself with <strong>the</strong><br />
