The Life of God in the Soul of Man by Henry Scougal

The book instrumental in George Whitefield’s conversion The Life of God in the Soul of Man (1677), was originally written as a private letter to a ‘dear’ friend, to explain Christianity. It was never intended for publication. Yet it has become a classic Puritan text and one of the most read and influential treatises ever written for the comfort of God’s saints.

eauty and magnificence <strong>of</strong> this godly frame, <strong>the</strong> order<br />

and harmony <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole creation, let our thoughts<br />

from <strong>the</strong>nce take <strong>the</strong>ir flight towards that omnipotent<br />

wisdom and goodness which did at first produce, and<br />

doth still establish and uphold <strong>the</strong> same. When we<br />

reflect upon ourselves, let us consider that we are not a<br />

mere piece <strong>of</strong> organized matter, a curious and wellcontrived<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>e; that <strong>the</strong>re is more <strong>in</strong> us than flesh, and<br />

blood, and bones, even a div<strong>in</strong>e spark, capable to know,<br />

and love, and enjoy our Maker; and though it be now<br />

exceed<strong>in</strong>gly clogged with its dull and lumpish<br />

companion, yet ere long it shall be delivered, and can<br />

subsist without <strong>the</strong> body, as well as that can do without<br />

<strong>the</strong> clo<strong>the</strong>s which we throw <strong>of</strong>f at our pleasure. Let us<br />

<strong>of</strong>ten withdraw our thoughts from this earth, this scene<br />

<strong>of</strong> misery, and folly, and s<strong>in</strong>, and raise <strong>the</strong>m towards<br />

blessed <strong>in</strong>habitants solace <strong>the</strong>mselves eternally <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

div<strong>in</strong>e presence, and know no o<strong>the</strong>r passions, but an<br />

unmixed joy and an unbounded love. And <strong>the</strong>n consider<br />

how <strong>the</strong> blessed Son <strong>of</strong> <strong>God</strong> came down to this lower<br />

world to live among us, and die for us, that he might<br />

br<strong>in</strong>g us to a portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same felicity; and th<strong>in</strong>k how<br />

he hath overcome <strong>the</strong> sharpness <strong>of</strong> death, and opened<br />

<strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>gdom <strong>of</strong> heaven to all believers, and is now set<br />

down on <strong>the</strong> right hand <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Majesty on high, and yet<br />

is not <strong>the</strong> less m<strong>in</strong>dful <strong>of</strong> us, but receives our prayers,<br />

and presents <strong>the</strong>m unto his Fa<strong>the</strong>r, and is daily visit<strong>in</strong>g<br />
