A standing-room-only
crowd packed the hearing
room at the Lynnfield Center
Water District (LCWD)
Monday night demanding
clean water.
“My water stinks of chlorine
and I won’t drink this
terrible brown water that
stains my clothes in the
washer,” said Stephanie
Rauseo of Russet Lane who
brought photos of the discolored
water for the threemember
Board of Water
Commissioners.
In the tiny room where the
temperature reached over 80
degrees despite a window
air conditioner, residents of
Apple Hill Lane, Lowell and
Main streets, and Cortland
Lane said they have been
have been living with brown
and sometimes black water
for years.
Lisa Lopez, who bought
a six-bedroom Cape style
home with her husband on
West Tapley Road five years
ago, said neighbors want answers
now about what will
be done and if there’s a plan
to remedy the problem.
“I can’t drink the water,
I can’t do the laundry,” she
said. “No effort has been
made to look at my home.
I’ve yet to hear what you
plan to do about it.”
WATER
From page 1
Water fight in Lynnfield
that serve Lynnfield. It produces
and distributes water to
more 2,600 homes, businesses
and public buildings in the
northwest two-thirds of the
town. But neighbors say the
panel has ignored their complaints
about the water for
years.
Constance Leccese, chairwoman,
assured the crowd
something was being done.
She said in the short term,
LCWD will pay up to $200 for
the purchase and installation
of a water filter that, she said,
should alleviate the problem
temporarily.
The long range plan she said
is construction of a water treatment
plant at a cost of up to
$5 million that would have to
be approved by a majority of
the district’s 8,000 Lynnfield
customers.
“We acknowledge this is a
problem,” she said. “That’s the
reason we are putting this rebate
system in place now.”
But many people in the
crowd said a filter would need
to replaced once a week given
the discolored water.
“I can tell you a filter won’t
last more than a week given the
conditions in our homes,” said
one man. “Who will pay to replace
them every week?”
Another resident suggested
ratepayers not be charged for
water or be given a substantial
discount until the problem is
solved. But that idea was rejected
by Leccese.
Kenneth Burnham, water
superintendent, said the
reason for the discolored
water is deposits of iron and
magnesium. He insisted the
water was “safe” noting that
tests submitted to the state
confirmed the town’s water
meets all the criteria of the
federal Safe Water Act. He
said the best remedy is a
new treatment plant which
could take years to win
The other option is tying
into the Massachusetts Water
Resources Authority which provides
water and sewer services
to 3.1 million people and more
than 5,500 industrial users in 61
Greater Boston communities.
But the cost would be about
$20 million, a tough financial
pill for the community to
swallow.
“We work for you and want
to solve this,” Burnham said.
But many of the residents
were dissatisfied with the
answers.
“Is there a Plan B if the $4
million is not approved by residents?”
asked one woman in
Burnham said there is no alternate
plan.
For now, he said, they plan
a high velocity flush of the
system, which should alleviate
the problem. But he
acknowledged the water pressure
has not been sufficient
enough to get the job done
since many residents are violating
the no outside water-use
policy.
“We are collecting about
$800 in fines weekly,” he said.
But that response brought
groans from the crowd.
“Are you serious,” said one
man. “How do you sleep at
night?” asked another.
If pigs could fly ... (They did.)
BY THOR JOURGENSEN
LYNNFIELD WEEKLY EDITOR
LYNNFIELD — Mary
Valle’s Summer Street School
students, and their pigs, are
off to a flying start with a new
school year underway.
That’s right, pigs.
Valle teaches her third and
fourth grade special needs students
that the sky’s the limit
when it comes to their potential.
She awards classroom
accomplishments by breaking
out the classroom collection
of toy pigs and sending them
aloft.
“When they do something
they didn’t think they could do,
we have a ‘pigs fly’ celebration,”
she said.
Valle is just one of the 300
Lynnfield public school educators
who welcomed most of
the district’s 2,200 students to
a new school year Wednesday.
Preschoolers and kindergartners
start school on Sept. 4
and School Superintendent
Jane Tremblay said she is excited
to raise the curtain on a
new year.
She has already welcomed
Dr. Karen Dwyer as Summer
Street’s new principal and
Roberta Keane as the district’s
new student services
director. Lynnfield teachers
spent part of the summer focusing
on teaching methods
and Tremblay can’t wait to see
We want to hear
from you!
Send us a letter at
Letters should be no more
than 300 words.
them translate techniques they
learned into classroom success.
“We spend a tremendous
amount of time coaching
teachers and letting teachers
work with each other,”
Tremblay said.
A top priority for Tremblay
this year, she said, is working
on students’ social and emotional
development. She said
education as a profession
has made major strides in
the last 20 years on focusing
on the emotional component
of learning including parental
attachment and “school
phobia.”
Lynn Lyons, author of the
book “Anxious Kids, Anxious
Parents,” is leading a presentation
to parents on Oct. 24, 6:30
p.m., at the Lynnfield Middle
School.
“Students are getting better at
articulating anxiety and fears. It
has become increasingly more
important,” Tremblay said.
Emotional health has a direct
bearing on learning, she
said, and she values her fellow
Lynnfield educators’ ability
to listen to students and their
parents.
Dwyer said getting a clear
idea of Summer School parents’
concerns and needs is one of her
priorities as she takes the helm
of an elementary school with
470 students and a 30-person
staff.
“It’s the start of everything
she said.
She was thrilled to learn
Valle is a fellow Tufts
University graduate and Dwyer
was moved by Valle’s story of
how she left a law career to
pursue teaching. Valle said she
made the career switch after
advocating for special education
Jacqueline, who now works
with animals.
“I had a calling: That was
what I was supposed to do,” she
said.
She has taught for two and
a half years in Lynnfield and
this is her first year at Summer
MORE-INCLUSIVE STATIN GUIDELINES
The cholesterol-lowering drugs that are known collectively as “statins,”
which include atorvastatin (Lipitor), rosuvastatin (Crestor), and others,
have proven themselves to be so safe and effective that the U.S. Preventive
Services Task Force thinks more people should take them. The
USPSTF suggests that everyone over 40 should be screened to see if
they need the medication regardless of their history of cardiovascular
disease. The new guidelines suggest that people ages 40-75 who have
one or more risk factors (high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes,
or smoking) placing them at a 10 percent or greater risk of having a heart
attack or stroke in the next ten years should be on statins. This recommendation
should spur conversations between patients and their
doctors.
It’s a good idea to keep an updated list of all the over-the-counter and
prescription medications you use. This includes supplements. Include on
your list the date of its last update. You may also want to make a spreadsheet
that lists the medication’s name, dosage, when to take it, what it’s
for, and the prescribing doctor’s name. To learn more, please call or visit
VILLAGE PHARMACY in the Colonial Shopping Center (781-334-3133).
We feature ComputerRX for online refills and Parata Pas packaging
system which allows us to customize the dispensing of your medications.
HINT: Statins are among the best-selling drugs in the United States.
Sports
Senior-laden Pioneers primed for new season
By Anne Marie Tobin
LYNNFIELD — There is a
distinct and undeniable level
of excitement in the air when
it comes to the 2018 Lynnfield
High boys soccer team.
Last year Lynnfield finished
the regular season 8-7-3 and
earned the No. 7 seed in the
Division 3 North state tournament.
The Pioneers drew a
strong Melrose team, the No.
7 seed, in round one and were
eliminated with a 4-1 loss.
Fast forward to this year
and with the loss of only four
seniors (only two of whom
started) it would appear that
all of the pieces are in place to
make a deep run in the tournament
and, perhaps, compete
for a Cape Ann League Kinney
Division title.
“The team is looking great
and we have lots of returning
players with a lot of varsity
experience,” said coach
Brent Munroe. “The kids have
worked really hard in the spring
and summer off-season and
things are looking really good
for us. We are really athletic
and physically stronger than we
have been in recent years, and
that may be because of the fact
we have 10 seniors on the team
who have been playing varsity
together since sophomore year
when five of them were regular
starters. They may have taken
their lumps that year, but I am
so optimistic that this team is
Lynnfield’s boys soccer captains, from left Jonathan Luders, David Gentile, Michael Gentile and
Jack Campbell, hope to lead the Pioneers to a deep run in the tournament this year.
going to be very good.”
This year’s team will be led
by five senior captains - returning
captain and last year’s
team Player of the Year honoree,
CAL First team All-Star and
Eastern Mass All-Star, Jonathan
Luders, 2017 Most Improved
Player Michael Gentile and
twin brother and CAL Second
Team All-Star David Gentile,
returning captain Nathan Bass,
a midfielder, and goaltender
Jack Campbell.
Other seniors returning for
another varsity campaign include
forward Aidan Connelly,
midfielder Max Sieger, midfielder
Jackson Cleary and defender
Joseph Connelly.
Lynnfield has a strong junior
class with five returning
varsity players, led by forward
Thomas Buston and midfielder
Tommy Hauser, who
last year had breakout seasons.
Also returning are midfielder
Alejandro Lynch, defender
Matthew Juliano and forward
Joseph Cibelli.
Also back are three sophomores
who saw action as
freshmen on both the junior
varsity and varsity squads
throughout the 2017 season.
Dante Gesamondo is in the mix
at goalkeeper, while Jack Bird
is in the midfielder mix and
Luke Martinho may likely see
time on defense.
Munroe had a chance to see
the team in live action Saturday
at a 4-team round robin
scrimmage at home against
Marblehead, Reading and St.
John’s Prep.
“We looked really good and
I felt really good about the fact
that we only gave up a handful
of shots in the St. John’s scrimmage,”
Munroe said. “It’s hard
to really conclude anything as
some teams played more of
their whole teams, so it’s hard
to judge, but we more than held
our own and won two games
and tied St. John’s, and we
looked especially good against
them, so I was very happy.”
While the roster has yet
to be finalized, Munroe said
freshmen Dominic Ferrante,
a defender, and Ben Sykes, a
midfielder, have looked impressive
and may be in the mix for
varsity minutes.
“They played really well in
Saturday’s scrimmage, so they
may be key players for us,”
Munroe said.
The starting lineup is beginning
to take shape. Campbell
will start in net with Gesamondo
on the bench as a backup.
“Dante is on the shelf so to
speak as he broke his leg last
spring, so he won’t be ready
for at least a couple of weeks,”
Munroe said. “Had he not had
the injury, he would have been
competing with Jack for the
starter’s role, but he’s just not
ready yet.”
Martinho and David Gentile
will start at center back with
Lynch and Juliano starting at
outside back.
“Luke got a lot of varsity
minutes last year when Tommy
Hauser broke his wrist, so he
brings a lot of experience,”
said Munroe. “Lynch was a
part-time starter last year and
Matt also had experience, so
those kids along with David
and Michael as the defensive
center back, that gives us a very
strong backfield, especially up
the middle.”
Bass, Hauser, Cleary and
Sieger are likely to start in the
midfield depending on formation,
while the Pioneers’ top
two scorers, Luders and Buston,
return as forwards.
“Max and Jack both are
looking especially good,” said
Munroe. “They both played
football and their first year of
soccer was only last year, but
they have really worked hard in
the offseason, so it’s night and
day compared to where they
were last year.”
Munroe said he expects the
Kinney Division will be strong
this year.
“The Large has been really
good the last few years and
Masco obviously is going to
be tough to beat, but Pentucket
also looks to be strong as well
as Newburyport, which returns
almost its entire team, and
North Reading is always good,”
Munroe said. “Manchester-
Essex is probably the best team
in the Small, so they will be
tough, and we have two nonleague
games against Austin
Prep team that is always a
good tournament team, so the
schedule is going to be tough
again.”
Lynnfield opens the season
Wednesday, Sept. 5 (4:30 p.m.)
at North Reading.
Plenty of new faces for Lynnfield girls soccer
By Anne Marie Tobin
LYNNFIELD — When the Lynnfield girls soccer team
opens the 2018 season next Wednesday, Sept. 5 at home
against Cape Ann League archrival North Reading, there
will be plenty of new faces on the pitch.
The Pioneers lost 14 to graduation (including 8 starters),
the most ever on a Mark Vermont-coached team).
“That’s not too many, is it,” joked Vermont, now in his
18th season. “We are very young, but we do have some
players with significant varsity experience so the challenge,
being so young, will be to play consistent soccer. It’s still
too early to see who will play where as we lost some very
strong players, so it will be a challenge.”
That’s putting it mildly.
Gone are the likes of Pioneer captains Lizzie Shaievitz, the
Cape Ann League Kinney Division Most Valuable Player
and Eastern Mass Division 3 Player of the Year along with
CAL First Team All-Star Kate Mitchell and CAL Second
Team honorees Sydney Santosuosso and Hannah Filipe
along with 2-year starting goaltender Mackenzie O’Neill.
Last year, the Pioneers finished the regular season 12-3-3
and were the No. 4 seed in the North Division 3 tournament
where they were eliminated in the quarterfinals in a
1-0 overtime loss to Newburyport.
With a whole new slate of players competing for playing
time and starting positions, everything’s up for grabs.
Leading the way for the Pioneers this season are tri-captains
Emma Montanile, a senior, and juniors Tori Morelli
and Liz Sykes. Montanile and Morelli have starting experience
at midfield, while Sykes is the only starting returner
in the backfield.
“They are all excellent players and bring good energy to
the team,” said Vermont. “They are all excited to get going
and see what we can accomplish this season.”
Junior Anna-Maria Ferrante also saw action as a starter
in the midfield.
Other returners with varsity experience are junior midfielder/forward
Abby Lucich, a spot starter, and junior
Amberly McCarter, who is the only goalkeeper on the roster.
“Liz, Anna and Abby were pulled up midway or late in
their freshman seasons and they came up and contributed
right away,” said Vermont. “They have had the benefit of
being with some pretty strong teams, so that will be a big
DINING GUIDE DIRECTORY
help.”
The good news for Lynnfield this year is that several
promising players who were called up late last season for
the tournament are back for another season. That group
includes sophomore twin sisters Ashley (forward) and
Lauren Mitchell (defense), and sophomores Megan Nevils,
(defense), Lauren Bracconier (defense) and Emily Goguen
(forward).
Junior newcomers include defender Molly Ozanian and
outside midfielders Emma Ricciardi and Emma Nardone.
Sophomore newcomers include midfielder Julia Colucci,
Aidan Briggs, an outside midfielder, and defender Erin
Sharkey.
Freshman forward Audrey Parisi also made the varsity
cut.
“It’s too early to identify the strengths of the team, but
we have some good kids and are very young, but highly
motivated with a very high skill level,” said Vermont. “We
also have juniors who have played together in the past, and
the same with the sophomore group, so the kids have a lot
of familiarity with each other and I am hoping that translates
into good chemistry.”
