Here are a few examples of how intruder alarms can add value, every day. Building Automation - Many intruder alarms now feature building automation, in the form of proprietary or 3rd party applications, which offer control over lighting, power and other building functions to add value to the end user. Perimeter security - Perimeter security systems offer real peace of mind by putting off an intruder – whether an opportunist or a planned break-in attempt – before they get near the property. Safety devices - Installers can now offer commercial-grade, wireless carbon monoxide (CO) and smoke detectors to domestic customers. Cameras - Apps now enable users to monitor their cameras from anywhere in the world. Aesthetic upgrades - Upgrades such as LCD keypads with offer an elegant option luxury homes and high value premises. Nigel Greenberg – Solo Security Our SSAIB Approved Company has been installing security alarm systems for over 46 years and is recognised by police and insurance companies. I am concerned that several new alarm companies are selling systems to end users under the misleading impression that their systems are recognised by police and insurance companies. One such company states “when our alarm is triggered, our NSI Gold approved Alarm Receiving Centre will respond in an average time of 45 seconds.” They conveniently do not mention that their alarm installation company is NOT NSI approved or recognised by insurance companies or police forces and there is a grave danger that any insurance claim following a burglary would not be met. These non-approved installation companies could also employ fitters with criminal records as only NSI or SSAIB approved companies are required to have all employees security vetted. None of their equipment or installation protocols meet British or European Standards. This situation cannot be allowed to continue and all insurance companies and end users need to be made aware of the situation. Billy Hopkins – IDIS Europe This one is easy – my nomination for Room 101 is badly run technical support phone lines. They don’t support, they frustrate. When you need technical help you are usually in the middle of a project and up against a deadline, so you haven’t got time to mess around. At exactly that moment, the last thing you want is an automated system that makes you select from dozens of options and listen to repeated messages about calls being recorded for training and monitoring purposes. Neither do you want to have a conversation with a robot nor listen to music while you endlessly wait to for your call to be answered. You want to talk to a real person who understands your issue and quickly. I know exactly how installers feel about this – during integration projects IDIS comes into contact with lots of manufacturers, big and small. Most of the time we can sort things out quickly, but poor technical support does crop up surprisingly often. I remember one case where the ‘specialist’ we were eventually put through was also handling queries about dishwashers. So, to avoid Room 101, a technical support line must be easy to use. You want to connect quickly to the person who knows the technology you are having trouble with. Let’s also be honest, usually it’s better to talk to somebody in the same country and time-zone as us, just because it’s easier. And ideally the person on the other end of the line should be familiar with our industry, so they’ll have some basic understanding about the kind of project we’re working on. When manufacturers run helplines like that, there’s a fighting chance they’ll actually be able to help. Hold on – got to go – there’s someone else calling, so you might now have to listen to some tinny music for 15 minutes! www.psimagazine.co.uk
