together raising standards Meet the installer – Q&A Every month we talk to an NSI Gold accredited installer about life in the business. This month we take a look back at what installers said when we asked: Is third party accreditation beneficial? Darryn Faivelowitz – CTS Security Alarms Yes it is and I’m glad to see that the NSI appear to be more interested what they can do to support us today as well as auditing us. When I first came into the industry in the UK I noticed it was very well regulated and insurers were quite involved with the end user in terms of pushing the need for selecting accredited installation companies, usually NSI Gold. Accreditations are vital to us because there is certain commercial work that we wouldn’t have got without it. Unfortunately as equipment is so freely available nowadays there are more and more people ready to install it, so the need for accreditation is even higher today. If you want to portray a professional image you need to be NSI Gold. Steve Bird – Astra Security Absolutely! We were delighted to have recently been accredited with NSI NACOSS Gold under the new revised ISO:9001-2015 standard. We have a proven track record of delivering a consistently high level of service, expertise and commitment to all of our valuable customers. The team at NSI provide us with an invaluable source of support in many areas. Jacques Lombard – Syntinex Most definitely! We have held the NACOSS Gold accreditation now for the last three years. Being accredited by one of the security inspectorates means that the company is audited twice a year not just on our technical abilities but on our ISO 9001 quality management systems. We hold the Safecontractor accreditation for health and safety and are members of the BSIA (British Security Industry Association) where we contribute in developing industry guidance documents, standards and regulations. This ensures that we work to the highest standards delivering our services efficiently and in the most cost effective and safest manner. David Barnes – Black Box Most definitely yes, the security industry has been well regulated through NSI for over forty years. However, we have found that the introduction of the equipmentgrading scheme has meant that lower level grades are more commonly requested than they were prior to this benchmarking. This move has had an adverse effect on the quality of the systems especially with the signalling transmission unit. Prior to the introduction of grading most systems had a RedCARE/GSM or DualComm transmission device, which would now be equivalent to grade 4 signalling transmitter. The insurance companies need to get a hold on this, and start specifying not only the grade of the system but also the grade of signalling device. Insurance companies now request grade 2 or grade 3, which are lower priced and, of course compliant, however standards should be driven by insurance companies and the monitoring device should be the equivalent of a grade 3 or a grade 4. Regarding life safety systems, there is much work to be done here by the regulatory bodies and the industry in the way of education and benchmarking. Even though a fire alarm system protects life, anybody can install a system and create their own certificate, which will be accepted by most insurance companies and local building control offices. We are very rarely asked for a BAFE/LPCB certificated system and after what happened at Grenfell and other residential buildings, we must act now and regulate so that all fire systems should have a BAFE or LPCB certification.
