A RESIDENT fed up with
speeding vehicles on Hamptons
Rd has taken measures into his
own hands.
Tom Gilmour has made speedrelated
signs and placed them on
roadside posts and power poles
in a bid to get drivers to slow
down.
“I thought they were a wee bit
tacky looking and wee bit last
minute but I felt like something
needed to be done,” he said.
Mr Gilmour says he’s concerned
about his daughter’s
safety and the noise vehicles
make when they are “howling”
down the road.
He’s lived on Hamptons Rd for
about a year and says he’s seen an
increase in vehicles driving past,
especially trucks, and in peak
hours.
“I don’t know if that is the case
or if its always been the case and
I’m starting to realise it now,” Mr
Gilmour said.
Although he’s not sure the
signs have made an impact yet,
Mr Gilmour says speed bumps
or the installation of a footpath
along the side of the road may
help with the issue.
He said lowering the speed
limits on the road, which are currently
60km/h and 80km/h, probably
wouldn’t make a difference.
District council road safety
co-ordinator Peter Daly said the
issues of drivers exceeding speed
limits is on “roads generally” and
not restricted to Prebbleton or
Hamptons Rd.
He said the Prebbleton Community
Association’s radar speed
sign, which is currently on Springs
Rd, is going to be rotated between
different sites in the town.
INTERNATIONAL
“Hamptons Rd can be one of
those. The association is to send
through its desired locations and
we will have our maintenance
contractor install the ground
socket and relocate the sign,” Mr
Daly said.
The sign, which cost about
$8500, aims to help with increased
traffic through Prebbleton.
Mr Daly said police are
responsible for enforcement of
speed limits and the district
council’s responsible for setting

“People have responsibility for
the speed they drive at. This is
the biggest problem,” he said.
The district council, along
with other Canterbury councils,
is planning a promotional campaign
on excess speed for later in
the year.

VEHICLE FIRE
Firefighters were called to
extinguish a vehicle fire on
Tancreds Rd in Lincoln at 9pm
last Tuesday. Lincoln chief fire
officer Jeremy Greenwood said
the cause of the blaze is unknown,
but he believes the vehicle was
abandoned. He said it took 20min
to extinguish the blaze, which
“destroyed” the vehicle.
LINCOLN ATM GONE
An ANZ automated teller machine
on Gerald St in Lincoln has been
removed due to its low use. An
ANZ spokeswoman said it has
no plans to replace it as there
are other ATMs in the area. “It’s
important to remember that, since
earlier this year, bank customers
can use any other banks’ ATMs
without having to pay a fee,” the
ANZ spokeswoman said.
RAIL TRAIL OPENING
The Lincoln Community
Committee and Christchurch
Little River Rail Trail Trust will
open the final part of the rail
trail through Lincoln at 10am on
Sunday. The bridge is south of
Liffey Springs by the tennis courts
on Liffey Springs Drive. People can
take their bikes so they can ride
from the bridge to Moirs Lane.
