Josh nails down a bright future

Farrar-de Wagt, being paid to

The 22-year-old was runner-up
in the Central South Island Registered
Master Builders CART-
ERS 2018 Apprentice of the Year.
Though a little disappointed
not to get the top spot, Mr
Farrar-de Wagt said he is “pretty
happy” with runner-up after a
third placing last year.
The winner was Peter Ravn,
26, from St Albans and third was
Reuben Elley, 27, from Bryndwr.
This year, apprentices put their
skills to the test in the first ever
regional practical challenge.
Apprentices were judged on
their initial entry submission,
with the top 10 in each region
progressing to an interview with
the judging panel and an on site
visit where contestants discussed
their projects.
For the practical part of the
competition, Mr Farrar-de Wagt,
who works for Clive Barrington
Construction Ltd, created a
wooden tool box.
“It wasn’t my best work but
in those sort of situations you
either go well or you don’t, and
I didn’t do the best that I could
have,” he said. Having become
fully qualified earlier in the year,
Mr Farrar-de Wagt said he has
learnt a lot during his four year
apprenticeship.
“It was good. Being able to
earn money and learn at the
same time and obviously get
paid rises as you know more
about the trade and industry,” he
said. With no plans to compete
in anymore competitions, Mr
Farrar-de Wagt said he’ll keep
building and see what happens
in the future.

Mr Kelly said it “applauds the
commitment and determination”
from all of the apprentices.
