Steam infusion processer is
delivering fast drinks results
Take 5, South Africa’s
leading producer of
Maheu and Mabele, has
taken full ownership of its new
18,000 litre per hour Jet Cook
steam infusion Maheu system.
The total system has been
designed, manufactured and
installed by DC Norris in less
than 6 months, to the delight
of the customer.

THE WORLD’S FASTEST
DC Norris believes this is the
world’s fastest producing
Maheu and Mabele system
as it is capable of producing
6,000 litres of product in only
20 minutes with a single vessel
and operated by a single
person. The system has a
footprint of only 4 x 7 metres
and consists of the patented
multi in-line Jet Cook steam
infusion system.

In operation, it is capable
of cooking and hydrating the
maize and sorghum flour in
single figure minutes, while
a specially designed 1000
litre powder induction system
which entrains 600 kgs of
maize flour, completes this
task in 2 minutes.
The processes are all
controlled by the DC Norris
patented Recipe
Manager
software.
The total
system has

manufactured

and has since
evolved over the years into
one of South Africa’s top shortlife
fruit juice and Maheu
producers. The company is a
leader in chilled Maheu and
Mabele, and now produces
approximately 70,000
bottles of Maheu per day and
distributes it through its own
supply chain to millions of
customers in Africa.
This new, single system
will replace 14 existing steam
vessels and as many as 12
operators, as it will be operated
by a single person. The new Jet
Cook will use approximately
50% less energy than the
company’s existing systems
and will have zero burn-on,
dramatically reducing the use
of water for cleaning.
This is a huge benefit in a
country where water is both
expensive and in short supply
in many states, says DC Norris.

Sleeves are now coded quickly

coding gains
Rotech’s RF Lite TIJ (thermal
inkjet) has become an “invaluable
part of the process” at P.K.Foods
Glasgow, having transformed
the efficiency of the pakora
producer’s coding operation.
The unit was purchased following
a visit to the PPMA Show last year.
The user-friendly coder has
won over staff on the factory floor
and enabled the fast-growing
business to meet the lead time
expectations of its expanding
supermarket customer base.
“This machine has been
fantastic,” says Jason Stevenson,
sales director and partner
at P.K.Foods Glasgow.
“Coding used to be slow,
painful and labour intensive
and now a single operator can run
off 5000 sleeves in just two or
three hours.”
Previously, the company
was employing staff who just
hand-stamped all day. “When
we started to win more and
more business with national
supermarkets, this became too
inefficient and time-consuming,”
explains Stevenson.
The RF Lite takes flat
cardboard sleeves from a hopper,
feeds them through an inkjet
printer so they can be date-coded
and stacks them again ready for
use. It can handle a variety of
sleeve shapes and sizes and only
takes seconds to swap between
sizes without special tools or
training. Its linear speed is
60 metres a second.
