CHINESE
STUDENTS
HELP TOURISM
BUSINESSES
GROW
A
program that sees Chinese
university students matched
with South Australian tourism
businesses has achieved great results,
helping several operators tap into the
growing Chinese inbound market.
In the lead up to the 2018 Australian
Tourism Exchange (ATE), StudyAdelaide
matched students to 13 businesses in
order to help them develop strategies for
developing the Chinese market.
The students were placed in paid roles for
three months, helping tourism operators
establish their presence on Chinese social
media platforms, translate marketing and
promotional material, conduct market
research and identify businesses to meet
with at ATE.
Operators reported that the experience
was invaluable, setting them up for
success at ATE and signalling to Chinese
delegates that they were serious about
their engagement with China. Rooms
Division Manager at the Port Lincoln
Hotel Katherine Arthur said they used the
program to get China ready in the lead
up to ATE.
“Our student, Lusha, provided cultural
feedback on our product offering and
menus. She also translated various
documents and forms, such as registration
cards, advertising collateral, attractions
and personalised letters,” Katherine said.
“She also identified new opportunities and
potential Chinese buyers to help us break
further into this market.”
For Getaways SA, the program was an
opportunity to investigate a new market.
“We have always been really keen to
get into the Chinese market, but have
not known how to do it,” said General
Manager Kym Brown.
With the help of their student, Miao,
Getaways SA gained insights and
knowledge they had not previously
had access to, while the experience
helped Miao expand her knowledge of
South Australia.
Majestic Hotels saw the program as a way
to gain a better understanding of what the
Chinese traveller wants. They employed
Sherry who helped with translating,
data analysis and reviewing the brand’s
presence in China.
“Working with Sherry has been a
fantastic experience. She has made
some really good recommendations
and helped us understand and target
the Chinese market,” General Manager
Lucy O’Brien said.
