TOURISM & RETAIL: TIPS TO
SELL MORE THAN MEMORIES
BY ALI UREN, FOUNDER / DIRECTOR – KIIKSTART
When we think of tourism, it is
often through experiences. But
there is one untapped area of
the industry that can add value to your
customer’s experience – tangible products.
Locally-made, tangible products provide
a great channel to help tell your brand’s
story and showcase the unique selling
points of your region.
For example, if your tourism business is
located within one of South Australia’s
wine regions, you may consider
incorporating a signature wine from a local
winery to further enhance your offering
and your customer’s experience.
Other products could include food, local
artwork, fragrances, body and skincare, as
well as products that showcase the culture
and / or heritage of the region, such as
Indigenous culture.
Before introducing tangible products
within your business, it is important to
know where the gaps currently exist and
identify a relevant product offering that will
complement your brand.
Focus on what your visitors want and take
into consideration the barriers that are key
to closing a sale. For example, make sure
the products are not too bulky and heavy
by being wary of shape and size, and
customs requirements.
Listen to your visitors, ask them what
products they would like to see and have a
plan to use their feedback.
Host a local
supplier
showcase
You could host an event, say every fortnight, that showcases a supplier from your region. Encourage
them to offer free samples of their product to generate and boost sales. This is a great avenue for
smaller, emerging businesses that do not have a shopfront, but who want to further promote their brand.
