Pioneer field hockey in mid-season form
By Anne Marie Tobin
PEABODY — The Peabody
High field hockey team took it
on the chin this weekend, losing
Saturday at home to visiting
Lynnfield, 7-0.
It may be early in the season,
but the Pioneers were firing on
all cylinders, as the Pioneers
cruised to their second straight
shutout win.
The Pioneers dominated possession
and kept the offensive
pressure on the entire first half.
The Tanners rarely crossed midfield
and were pinned in their
defensive end for most if not
all of the first half, which ended
with the Pioneers on top 6-0.
The second half was a different
story, as the Tanners gave
as good as they got, creating
several good scoring opportunities
but they were unable to
get one past Pioneer goaltender
Emily Dickey (4 saves).
The score might have been
even more lopsided but for the
joint efforts of Peabody goalies,
Kiley Collela and Sydney
Branga. Collela started but
lasted only about 10 minutes
after suffering a head injury and
had to leave the game.
“Both of them played great,”
said Peabody’s first-year coach
Tawny Palmieri. “They really
made some quality saves,
especially considering they
were under a lot of pressure
in that first half. Even though
we lost, I see good things. In
both of our losses this year, we
have only allowed one goal in
the second half, so that is very
encouraging.”
Lynnfield wasted no time getting
on the board. Senior captain
Ashley Barrett got things started
with a goal just three minutes in.
She tipped home a rebound off
the stick of junior Lily Rothwell
to put the Pioneers on top, 1-0.
About three minutes later,
Rothwell did the honors to
double the Pioneers’ lead to 2-0.
At the 18:14 mark, Barrett
notched her second goal of
the contest following a corner.
Sophomore Jen Flynn was credited
with an assist.
The Pioneers continued to
pour it on, adding three more
goals over the next 11 minutes.
With 15:35 left in the half,
sophomore Madison Murphy
took a centering pass from
Rothwell and slammed it home
just inside the left post to make
it 4-0.
Rothwell picked up her
second goal of the day at the
9:29 mark following a Barrett
corner. Three minutes later, junior
Carolyn Garofoli drilled a
bullet home from a tough angle
nearly on the goal line to close
out the scoring and send the
Pioneers into halftime with a 6-0
lead.
Reardon went to her bench
to start the second half and was
pleased with what she saw.
“Some of the younger kids
from the bench got a chance
to play a lot of minutes, and I
needed to see that,” Reardon
said. “I needed to see that we do
have a bench that can come in
and contribute, and I thought it
was great that they didn’t allow
any goals in that second half.
“Games like this one are
tough, because you like to give
your starters more time for conditioning
reasons and also to
work on things we try at practice,
but today, they just didn’t
have the time to do that today.”
Lynnfield closed out the
scoring four minutes into the
second half with a goal by senior
Lauren Gaudette, her first career
varsity goal. Senior Julianne
Gildea picked up the assist, her
first varsity point.
Peabody’s best chances in the
second half came on corners.
With 10 minute to go, Dado
Nasso made a long run up the
middle of the field and drew a
corner. The ball was played into
the box with several Tanners
in a scrum, but nobody could
get poke it home. With under
two minutes left, senior captain
Jessica Bacelar played the ball
to Hailee Monies, who centered
the ball. The ball popped back
to Monies, but her shot was
blocked.
While Peabody dropped to
0-2, Palmieri is nonetheless
optimistic.
“We are very young but I
see much more aggressiveness
than I expected,” Palmieri said.
“I see the potential and we are
heading in the right direction.
We had two tough opponents
with Beverly, who beat us 6-0,
and Lynnfield as they are two of
the best teams around, so there
is nothing to be negative about.
“I’ve never coached field
hockey before so it may take
longer to figure it out, but one
thing I do know is that every
school has athletes and you just
have to find a way to bring them
out.”
On the other side of the coin,
Lynnfield is off to a 2-0 start
and has yet to allow a goal. The
Pioneers opened with a 4-0 win
at North Reading last Thursday.
Flynn, senior captain Abby
Buckley, Murphy and Rothwell
scored one goal each, while
Rothwell, Barrett, Flynn and
Lemieux notched one assist each.
“I was thrilled with our passing
and transition from one side of
the field to the other,” Reardon
said. “They didn’t panic if the
wing got blocked, they instead
passed back to the defense, so
they did a really good job that
way. Often, they don’t think to
pass back, but it’s beginning to
be something they do think to
do. The second half particularly,
it was just pass-pass-passpass,
nothing but connecting all
over the field, so that was great
to see.”
Lynnfield’s next game is this
afternoon (Thursday) against
Rockport at home at 3:45, while
Peabody travels to Harry Della
Russo Stadium to take on NEC
rival Revere today at 4.
