City gets $400k
in Complete
Streets funding
By Thomas Grillo
The city stands to get
$399,820 to install a path
on Perkins Street from the J.
Henry Higgins Middle School
to Emerson Park and new
sidewalks.
Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito recently
joined Mayor Edward
A. Bettencourt Jr., Highway
Administrator Jonathan
Gulliver, and the legislative
delegation to celebrate the
most recent round of Complete
Streets grants totaling $7 million
awarded to two dozen
communities and recognize the
milestone of half of all cities
and towns statewide, implementing
policies encouraging
the advancement of Complete
Streets infrastructure.
The state program provides
safe and accessible options for
travelers of all ages and abilities
including bicyclists, pedestrians,
MBTA users, and
people using other forms of
transportation.
The Baker administration
awarded $30 million in construction
funding for 103 projects
since 2016.
Peabody received the cash
through this round of awards to
build a multi-use path from the
J. Henry Higgins Middle School
to Emerson Park, reconstruct
sidewalks, add new wheelchair
ramps, install new crosswalks,
and add signs. This is expected
to increase connectivity for residents
and school children and
better enable people to walk or
bike safely through this area.
“The Complete Streets
funding enables Peabody to
build a much-needed multi-use
path from the new Higgins
Middle School to Emerson
Park,” said Bettencourt. “We
are grateful to the Baker-Polito
Administration for their continued
support of cities and
towns and to our legislative
delegation for its ongoing advocacy
for infrastructure dollars.”
Polito said the investments
are examples of how the state
is partnering with municipalities
to strengthen the transportation
system and increase
access to jobs, businesses,
schools, and economic opportunities
throughout local
neighborhoods.
Gulliver thanked municipal
partners and staff who
are involved in managing the
program and implementing
multi-modal projects across the
Commonwealth.
“This is another example of
the strong working relationship
between state and local government
where Peabody residents
are the beneficiaries of that
partnership,” said state Rep.
Thomas P. Walsh (D-Peabody.)
Preparing for a party
beyond borders
By Thomas Grillo
It only comes once a year, but
the International Festival is perhaps
the biggest one-day party
in the city.
The annual event has been
called the largest exhibition of
culture on the North Shore. And
what’s more, it’s free.
“The International Festival
is the largest celebration of its
kind on the North Shore and
each year it gets bigger and
better,” said Mayor Edward A.
Bettencourt Jr. “This year, we
expect more than 50,000 people
to flock to Peabody Square to
sample an array of ethnic food
while enjoying art, music,
dance and culture from around
the world.”
The mayor and the Peabody
Area Chamber of Commerce
invite residents to join the celebration
on Sunday, Sept. 16,
where all of the cultures and
people that make the region so
unique are honored.
Since 1983, the festival has
attracted throngs with live
music, artists, and food inspired
from around the world lining
the streets from Main down to
the Square.
There will be activities for
children on Walnut Street including
music, games and more.
In addition, the Chamber will
host a beer garden on Main
Street. Beer will be supplied by
a local brewery.
The noon to 5 p.m. event
will showcase the city’s diversity
through its art and
food. Many ethnic foods will
be featured among the booths
lining Main Street. In addition,
you can view artwork by different
North Shore artists at the
International Festival Galleria.
This year, for the first time
ever, artists will be given an
opportunity to participate in an
outdoor art sale in a new venture
called “Fine Art on Foster
Street.”
Space will be provided for
the display and sale of artwork
in booths set up on Foster
Street, adjacent to the Galleria
Art Tent. Artists will have the
opportunity to display and sell
their works. Additionally, artists
who are willing to conduct
demonstrations of their art form
during the festival may apply
to have their $25 booth fee
waived.
Continuous ethnic entertainment
will be featured
throughout the day on two
stages. Families are invited to
enjoy the festival and visit the
Kids Day Celebration at the
East End Veteran’s Memorial
Park. They will be treated to
music, arts and crafts, moon
bounces, a magician, dancing
demonstrations, and much
more.
