free and fit and healthy.
He reckons he’s done about 55 events
in the past eight months. On top of that,
he turns up to his local Taieri Harrier Club
to do winter events with them regularly, as
well as going to a gym class run by his local
Age Concern and Parkrun events.
“I often do the Saturday morning Parkrun
and then go to the Harrier Club event
the same afternoon, sometimes followed
by a Sunday event.”
“The wilderness trail over
there had a variety of
challenges to contend
with.I’d never run an event
any greater than 5km
and this was 14km trail
event so that was a bit of
a push. We had to carry a
whistle and compression
bandages because of the
risk of snakes!
Keeping active is clearly not an issue
for this senior citizen and Grey Power
member. Tom also goes to the gym every
Friday for a session of quick moving exercises
to tone up his small muscle groups.
“My main focus however is track race
walking and to compete in road and off
road events.”
Tom is no mere participant - his collection
of gold medals is hugely impressive
and he shows no signs of slowing down.
One of his favourite events to date
is competing at the Australian Masters
Games in Tasmania last year.
“It was also daunting needing to use
ropes to help climb up and down some
particularly steep spots.
”And because of my ancestral convict
heritage, in a way it was nice to score some
gold back in medals that I won.”
His competitive spirit saw him progress
from walking for health benefits to travelling
around New Zealand and further afield
in pursuit of some fresh competition.
He has competed in New Zealand Master
Games in Whanganui, Dunedin, Nelson,
Timaru and Australia.
He reckons in his early years, where
he was in the automotive and engineering
trades, most of his exercise was clambering
up Baldwin Street in Dunedin where
his home was.
“The street wasn't famous back in those
days, but now it's been identified as the
steepest street in the world. That might
have been my training ground for better
things.”
Having been self employed as a labourer
in his latter years, Tom is a huge
advocate of the importance of fitness, particularly
as the body ages.
“Exercising is good for your general
health and wellbeing and a good way to
keep your mind busy and active.”
Tom continues to push himself, and
has walked three ultra endurance events
out to the 80km mark. (As a walker, he
clicks over as fast as some joggers do).
“I’m achieving the best I can and will
focus to keep up that momentum of ticking
over for as long as I can.”
He fuels his body with as much healthy
food as he can, enjoying cooking and relying
on his organic garden for good quality
ingredients.
Tom also supports the Brain Injury Association
when he can.
“I look back at the support they offered
to me when I needed their help, and am
there on street collection day to help out
and make myself available on any coffee
outings or lunch time meals that crop up
