BY PAULINE RAPHAEL MATAMATA GREYPOWER MEMBER Last May, while sitting at his computer, my brother John Raphael collapsed and died. No warning, just bang, gone!! Fortunately his wife Jennifer was in the room at the time. Normally she would have been elsewhere in the house. She managed to tip him off his chair onto the floor and commenced CPR while desperately trying to summon assistance. Luckily she could reach her cellphone and called 111. She put the phone on speaker while continuing CPR on John. Performing CPR is very intensive, particularly when being administered while standing, which Jennifer was doing as she had an injured knee. One can usually only manage about four minutes. She had been doing CPR for eight minutes, a truly heroic effort. Then she heard a banging at the door and there was a neighbour, an off duty firefighter. He had been summoned by the app on his cellphone, the message being triggered by Jennifer’s call to 111. The neighbour, Terry Robinson took over the CPR until the ambulance arrived and the paramedics could use a defibrillator to shock John’s heart back into beating. John was transferred to hospital and after surgery has made a great recovery, despite a couple of broken ribs. A small price to pay, he says. St John reports this was the first verified saving of a life, partly attributed to the GoodSAM App, that they were aware of. My family is grateful to the responder Terry, and to the fact that he had the app on his phone and answered the call so promptly. The emergency app that could save your life The Emergency App turns CPR trained members of the public into good samaratins by enabling a community response to patients in cardiac arrest. St John medical director, Doctor Tony Smith, says “by alerting community ‘responders’ to people nearby that are in cardiac arrest, we can amplify the call for help. “Imagine you are at home, in a mall or other public space, and someone in the vicinity suffered a cardiac arrest. You were able to respond and help, but you just needed to be alerted. Wouldn’t you want to know? Well now you can,” he says. Outcomes from cardiac arrest are dramatically improved when a patient receives immediate CPR and defibrillation within the first few minutes. Emergency services can’t always arrive that quickly, but it is likely that someone who knows CPR and how to use a defibrillator is nearby and able to help. GoodSAM is a FREE app that alerts registered ‘responders’, allowing them to possibly save a life by providing CPR and, where possible, using an automatic external defibrillator (AED) before emergency services arrive. “The more people who download the app, the more coverage we will achieve across New Zealand, and the more likely we are to improve outcomes from cardiac arrest”, says Doctor Smith.
