Tesla
Oliver Sinclair's letter in the last issue
drives me to despair, reading of yet another
Tesla evangelist with apparently a
very small knowledge of real science.
His “free energy which would have
extended all over the planet ” is total
nonsense. Mr Sinclair would be very well
advised to obtain a basic text on electromagnetics
and learn the difference between
reactive and radiated electromagnetic
fields, just for a start.
Nikola Tesla was an inventor, and was
passionate about science and engineering
and did have some sound and original
ideas. But “free energy which would
have extended all over the planet” is most
assuredly not one of them. Nor did he invent
a large number of other things that
Enjoy every
products to help you remain comfortable,
confident and in control every day.
have been popularly attributed to him.
Yes, wireless transmission of “energy”
(which is a sloppy usage of proper engineering
terms, energy is not some “thing”
rather it is a property of a real object) is
possible, but is incredibly inefficient over
more than a few centimeters. “Paywave”,
contactless charging of tablets and cellphones,
toothbrushes, razors, flashlights,
hearing aids, and other relatively lowpowered
devices are all modern examples.
However the principle was not invented
by Tesla, but rather by Michael Faraday,
some 25 years before Tesla was born.
Refer to the Royal Society papers read by
Michael Faraday on 24 Nov 1831 and 12
Jan 1832.
Yes, of course, with a massively powerful
transmitter, power can be transmitted,
most inefficiently, over longer distances,
but it most assuredly will never be
free. Furthermore a casual reader might
also recall the hysteria over cell-phone
towers which would be minuscule and
flea-powered by comparison
True, he died a worthless man, as
he devoted his later years to absurd and
failed ideas. Investors had left in droves.
These days some suggest he would probably
be diagnosed as a narcissist with obsessive
compulsive disorder.
His papers were not stolen, but confiscated
by the US Government as he
was unwise enough to claim that he had
invented a “death ray” even though no
documentation or concepts were ever
revealed. Recall this was in the darkest
days of WW2, so the US government’s
cautious reaction was understandable.
There wasn’t actually much as Tesla had
a habit of keeping most of his ideas in his
head. It took the National Defense Research
Committee just three days to issue
the following report:
‘[Tesla's] thoughts and efforts during
at least the past 15 years were primarily
of a speculative, philosophical, and
somewhat promotional character often
concerned with the production and wireless
transmission of power; but did not
include new, sound, workable principles
or methods for realizing such results.’
Tesla had claimed a box in his hotel
suite contained part of his death ray and
was most dangerous. After his death, it
was found to contain an old resistance
box, a standard electrical lab item.
His name has never been written out
of the history books. I have several that
mention him in some (but not totally
complimentary) detail. Mr Sinclair also
seems to be unaware that the SI unit for
magnetic flux density is “Tesla”, hardly a
hallmark of “removing his name”.
But don’t take my word for any of
this. Instead search the oracle of Google
with “how to build a Tesla free energy
machine” and you will be rewarded with
13,200,000 hits. That is hardly being
"kept quiet".
So, please, build one, or more, or several,
your choice, and get back to us with
your properly documented and verified
clearly be the fourth New Zealander to
Value senior citizens
Periodically the news media highlight the
ever increasing number of senior citizens
who qualify for National Superannuation
with particular reference to the affordability
of the current scheme. What the
media conveniently ignore is the fact that
senior citizens, who qualify for national
superannuation, have made a lifelong
contribution to the Government’s consolidated
fund through paying taxes over
a 40 to 50 year working life, and in retirement
still pay tax on their pension as well
as tax on investment income if they are
fortunate to have investment funds.
Senior citizens and Grey Power members
make a contribution to New Zealand
society, particularly with voluntary work
associated with community organisations,
sports clubs and social clubs, while
the extended family also benefits from
day to day involvement of senior family
members.
Senior citizens also have financial input
within the community with the payment
of property rates, GST, electric/gas
power/telephone accounts and general
housekeeping items such as the weekly
grocery bill.
The image of senior citizens sitting
around waiting for things to happen is
a myth. Without the major contribution
that senior citizens make within their
communities, New Zealand society would
be the poorer!
