With managing the various committees that the president has responsibilities for, staff, communications, magazine and commercial agreements, as well as co-chair of Advocacy, and all that entails; I have been extremely busy. I don’t think I have failed to answer any of the several hundred emails I have received, but I apologise in advance to anyone that I may have missed. Although there is a full Advocacy Report separate from this report, I would like to comment on a couple of points relating Mac Welch to our last advocacy visit. Grey Power has always enjoyed an excellent relationship with the NZ Labour Party which has always responded promptly to any requests for meetings and made themselves available to meet with us. This would seem to have changed since they have attained the government benches. It was noted on the lobby trip before the AGM, (after the change of government) that several requests for meetings were refused or went unanswered. At the time Advocacy co-chairs Tom O’Connor and Jan Pentecost attributed this to a new inexperienced government finding themselves under pressure in their newly appointed roles. However, on our last advocacy visit, of the eight ministers that we requested meetings with the results were as follows; three declined to meet, three did not respond at all, one requested the issues to be discussed which were provided and then did not respond, and the eighth agreed a meeting date and then cancelled once we were already in Wellington. This is shabby treatment indeed and we would hope that this situation is rectified in the very near future. Winston Peters did however meet with us and was generous with his time on what was the first day of his term as “acting Prime Minister”. During our conversation with Minister Peters we asked him if he supported the Labour, Green Party and Grey Power agreement on the appointment of an Aged Care Commissioner. He indicated that they (NZ First) would. With all three parties in the coalition now supporting the appointment of a commissioner which Labour committed would be announced in the first budget of a Labour government, I would expect this appointment to occur before or at the next budget. It is becoming apparent from many conversations that I have had with associations throughout the country, that they are finding it increasingly difficult to fill committee positions from president to treasurer etc. The advanced age of many office holders and committee members within our associations and a real lack of replacements is reaching crisis point. While younger members are reluctant to take up unpaid positions, the volunteer service ethic that has been for so long a hallmark of New Zealand society would seem to be sadly lacking in these younger members. The same can be said of declining membership, although the increases achieved by associations with active committees prove that it can still be done if you are prepared to put the work in. It is easy to blame the board for this decline in membership but the fact that this decline is occurring in all organisations throughout the country proves this is not a Grey Power board problem. St John Ambulance, RSA, volunteer fire fighters, ratepayers associations are all experiencing decline in membership and many are closing or cutting back on the services they provide. We will be having a discussion at the next AGM on how we reverse this trend. Many thanks to the board members, committee chairs and office staff who have worked so diligently and supported me over the last few months.
