Board of Directors Report (Continued) Scholarships At the annual Scholarship & Awards Luncheon, the Credit Union awarded 60 scholarships and bursaries valued at approximately $4 million. These scholarships were awarded to 55 top performers in the GSAT exams, students from our partner schools Central Branch All Age, The Queens School and one tertiary level scholarship - the Albert “Bertie” Morris Scholarship. The high school/ GSAT bursaries each valued at $12,500.00 provides assistance with school expenses. The bursary is renewable for five (5) years. The child however must maintain at least a “B” average throughout their high school tenure. Youth Savers Camp July is deemed as our summer camp month and saw most of our youth savers participating in a one (1) day camp at the Campion College. Our youth savers participated not only in sporting activities but were also engaged in activities which fostered sound financial habits. Activities included budgeting, borrowing and vision boards for planning ahead. Donations In 2017 we also made contributions and donations in cash and kind to our partner schools. These include St. John Bosco Career Advancement Institute, Central Branch All Age School, Polly Ground Basic School, Merrion and St. Mary’s the Virgin Basic Schools. All donations were geared toward creating a space conducive to learning that can bring out the best in each student no matter the age. In December, we hosted our first Christmas Children Treat for all our partnering schools. The Credit Union feted the children with fun rides and refreshments. Each child from our partnering basic schools received a personal gift directly from JPS & Partner’s Santa Claus. Children of our employees were also presented with gift certificates. MEMBER RELATIONS Beyond All Limits Each year, October is celebrated as Credit Union Month worldwide, a month we use to thank and celebrate with our members. October 2017 was no different. Member Appreciation Days were hosted across all branches. Members were feted and were given a token, to show our appreciation. During Credit Union Month we also launched the Creative Writing and Poster Competition among all our partner schools. The competition’s main aim was to inspire creativity and build upon literacy skills. The entrants each had facilitators to guide them along the way. This not only made reading and writing a developing skill but also imagination, evidenced by the inspiring words of Life Coach Rasheen Robinson at their awards function to “Dream on Purpose”. This competition was strategically designed to build an affinity to the Credit Union. Their creative efforts surrounded the theme “Credit Unions: Dreams Thrive here”. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY 2017 – BEYOND ALL LIMITS Social responsibility took the form of assistance to our internal and external stkeholders. As part of our outreach programme, the Credit Union continued to make contributions in cash and kind to organizations in need. The Care-A Bit Fund established many years ago, continues to provide assistance to members who were faced with major disasters and illnesses. They benefit from grants up to a maximum of $30,000.00 Monthly health checks continues. Each month a partnering nurse comes into the Credit Union to provide our members with medical check-ups. Board of Directors Report (Continued) Our financial assistance to all our partnering schools continues. Visits were made to all our partnering schools during Credit Union Month. Way Forward • To form strategic partnerships with other entities. • Shares, Deposits and Loans growth stimulation • Increased visits to locations islandwide • Special thanks also to: the Credit Union League, CUFMC, CUNA Caribbean Ins. Co. Ltd., Jamaica Co-operative insuurance Agency (JCIA) and the Registrar of Co-operatives and Friendly Societies for their continued support. Co-operatively, • Continue staff training and development • Review and implementation of key policies and operating procedures. • Continue preparation for the implementation of the Credit Union Act. CONCLUSION • On behalf of the Board of Directors, I thank God for His continued guidance and blessings throughout the years. • We also thank the Lord for all the stakeholders within the organisation who consistently displayed values of leadership, dynamism and teamwork. These are: our Members, who have always committed their financial well-being to us even in difficult times, Management, for their commendable performance, the Staff, who never fail to go the extra mile, Volunteers, who committed their time and energy. • Special thanks to the Board, management and staff of JPS, JEP,NESOL, JPPC, UC RUsal, Jamaica Revenue Centres, and Digicel for their invaluable partnership.
