NEWS October
2018
It’s hard to think of October without somehow starting to think of pumpkin spice everything and
all the spooks and thrills associated with the Halloween season. However, for many of us with
horses, the spice and spooks might not be coming from frothy lattes and candy-filled,
commercialized holidays. The chillier air and the changing of the leaves brings about an all too
commonly spicy and spooky season for our beloved horses. Flared nostrils, snorts, bucks and
bolts can be frightening for even the most experienced equestrians. Maybe, just maybe, we
should embrace the freshness of the season, mount our monstrous mares and ghoulish
geldings, and use this month as a learning opportunity. Why not take the reason for the season
and incorporate it into our sometimes all-too routine routines? Before we saddle up this
October, maybe we should challenge ourselves to build a stronger bond with our equine
companions by incorporating some built-in opportunities for growth. “Horses are scared of just
two things,” goes the saying. “1. Things that move. 2. Things that don’t.” Funny, yes, but also
frustratingly true. Every chance we get to expose our horses to something new or different is
an opportunity to strengthen our bond with them and better prepare them to handle any other
unexpected “goblins” throughout life. So, as you pass through the supermarket this week, let a
vampire, spider or Frankenstein hop in your cart and take a ride all the way to the barnyard.
Set your horse up for success and they’ll thank you later.
Our Wonderful Volunteers
The Farm House
Members’ Impressions of the
World Equestrian Games
From Sue Mullens:
I had a wonderful volunteering
experience at week two of WEG. I
got to scribe for five international
judges and shared the hot box
(literally) with the ever-entertaining
Jan Bellows and an e-scribe pictured
here who came from Portugal to
volunteer for two weeks. FRC
member Elizabeth Morosoni held it
and us all together and was truly
amazing!
Below is Sue with her daughters.
This amazing photo from the Driving Marathon was taken by Jodi Lees.
From Carole Foster:
My WEG Experience:
This was my first time attending an
event of this size so I was not sure
what to expect, but I enjoyed every
minute of it. I watched all three days of
Dressage and came away inspired.
Highlights from these three days
include witnessing so many people
cheering for local rider Julio Mendoza,
watching the gratitude each rider
showed towards their horses and
getting to see one of my favorite riders, Carl Hester. I also spent three days
volunteering for Media which afforded me with backstage access to Reining,
Vaulting and Show Jumping. My
takeaways from each of these
disciplines were to cheer on fellow
riders like the Reiners, be brave
like the Vaulters and treat my
horse like the Show Jumpers. My
job during Show Jumping was to
take the riders after their rounds
to the mixed zone for interviews
with the media. I was so happy to
see that every single rider did not
come out of the arena and hand
their horse off to a groom. They
spent the time cooling the horse
themselves and I witnessed many
of them taking off the tack and
washing them in their breeches and
coats. Each day I attended and
nearly every article I have read
since the games mention the
volunteers as the true heroes. I am
pleased to know that our little
section of the world will be
remembered in the horse
community as having the best
volunteers.

Alex and I attended 3 days of dressage and one day of the Driving Marathon. We
thoroughly enjoyed each day. The courtesy carts were a saving grace for my crippled
feet, transporting us wherever we needed to go. Our seats were good and the
volunteers were everywhere.
I want to know who choose the music to accompany the Grand Prix Dressage rides? It
was so well suited to each horse, often music associated with the represented
country.
FRC Scholarship Reminder
One of the perks of being an FRC member, is that you are
eligible to apply for one of the four $250 Member Scholarships
that we award each year. Scholarships can be used in a variety of
ways. In the past, they have been used for riders to defer the cost of
going to events such as championship competitions, rare educational
opportunities, or clinics applicable to your discipline. There are only a few
requirements to be considered for a scholarship. You must be a member at the time
of your application, and you also must be willing to share the knowledge you gained through
your scholarship experience with the club in some way (ideas must be approved by the
scholarship committee). This could be a short presentation at one of our seminars, info table
or infographic at shows, newsletter report, etc.
Want to apply for a scholarship, but not sure if your endeavor would be approved- don’t worry!
The application is short, sweet and to the point. If there happens to be an influx of applicants
at any deadline, volunteer service to the FRC in the current and preceding membership year
will be considered when awarding scholarships. Application deadlines are April 1 st , July 1 st ,
October 1 st , and January 1 st depending on the date of the event. Any member is eligible to
apply!
The Tryon Riding & Hunt Club is conducting their 43rd Annual Horse Trials at FENCE on
October 20-21 and they are in need of at least three dressage scribes from 730am until
about 2pm on the 20th. TRHC asked if we at FRC would be willing to offer the opportunity to
anyone who was present at our scribing clinic this summer to help out. TRHC has broken the
time span into two shorter shifts which would require six scribes in total but they would
welcome anyone who wants to scribe the entire time. TRHC also needs dressage ring
stewards and in-gate stewards too. The entire dressage phase is being managed by Jan
Bellows who is on our FRC Board.
Please follow this link to sign up. https://www.eventingvolunteers.com/events/554/signup
Anyone who wants to audit/observe the scribing process is welcome to contact Terry Lynch,
spouse of Jane who is also one of our Board members. Terry is the manager for the entire
Horse Trials event and he can be reached at 513-314-1146or lynchrt53@gmail.com with any
questions. This is a great opportunity for scribe clinic participants to practice their skills in a
non-“rated” (recognized) show. Margaret Freeman has also offered to allow 1 person per shift
to “shadow” her and practice scribing during this show.
