What is a Biopsychosocial Approach?
(Suzanne Raitt)
A Biopsychosocial approach to your health is
multidimensional. It uses an interactive holistic
model which considers the biological,
psychological and social dimensions.
The diagram to the right lists factors under
each of the 3 dimensions for consideration.
You can clearly see how they overlap
and are fundamentally interconnected
with one another. To consider them
all is essential to contributing to an
accurate diagnosis, allowing therapists /
counsellors access to a full history,
therefore providing you with a balanced,
healthy treatment.
emergence of the biopsychosocial approach. Waltham, MA: Elsevier.
Do you, or does anyone you love, need help or support with ADHD, Anxiety / Stress,
Mood Disorders, Addiction, Bullying / Self-harm / Suicidal thoughts, or Dementia?
This booklet contains a list of resources
allowing you to take a Biopsychosocial approach
to a healthier, happier you.

ADHD
(Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)
(Carla Budd)
Have you just been told that your child may have
ADHD? ADHD is defined as a neurodevelopment
disorder that contributes to hyperactivity,
impulsiveness, and an inability to focus in those
diagnosed with it. It is the top mental health disorder
for children in Canada, affecting 5% of school age
children from 5-12.
Although there’s no single cause identified, ADHD could be a result of the following:
Genetics
Environment (lead exposure)
Maternal use of drugs (alcohol, tobacco)
Brain trauma/injuries
Developmental delay in brain/neurochemical imbalance
Because ADHD symptoms can be mistaken for other disorders, it is difficult to diagnosis
and can cause stress for families.
Below are informational resources for public and private ADHD services that provide
diagnosis and treatment, and non-medical alternatives like counseling, education, and
support groups.
Anxiety & Stress
(Carla Budd)
If you’ve just been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder,
you’re not alone. Anxiety is very common and is defined
as “a chronic fear that persists in the absence of any direct
threat,”, and becomes a disorder once it interferes with
functioning in daily life.
Four types of anxiety include: Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Phobias, Agoraphobia (fear of
public places) and Panic Disorders, (Pinel, 2018) and is twice as common in women than men.
According to the Anxiety Disorders Association of Canada, “one in four Canadians (25%) will
have at least one anxiety disorder in their lifetime,” and in 2013 anxiety affected 3 million
Canadians, or 11.6% of the population over 18.
Definite causes of anxiety are unknown but may include:
Genetics
Environmental factors: work, school, relationships, home
Nutritional deficits, neurochemical imbalances
Substance abuse
Trauma
Research shows that Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is one of the most effective treatments
for anxiety. (Kaczkurkin, 2015). Discover resources for CBT and other information as you
educate yourself about what you can do and who is there to help.
Mood Disorders
(Joshua Togeretz)
Mood Disorders is a category of disorders that affect
our emotions. The illnesses that are commonly
referred to by the phrase Mood Disorders include:
depression, dysthymic disorder and bipolar disorder.
(Canadian Mental Health Association[CMHA], 2013).
In Canada, over 2.6 million (8.6% of the population) people meet the diagnostic criteria
for mood disorders (Statistics Canada, 2018).
Treatments of mood disorders are often effective and include: counselling,
medication, electro convulsive therapy, light therapy and self-management. Roughly
80% of people who properly access treatment no longer feel and symptoms (CMHA,
2013).
symptoms of mood disorders.
Addiction
(Joshua Togeretz)
Substance abuse or addiction is present in more than
1 billion people worldwide and is so prevalent that
“it is almost certain that you or somebody dear to you
will be adversely affected by drugs”
(Pinel & Barnes, 2018, p. 390).
Substance abuse is also frequently found to co-exist with other mental disorders,
especially mood disorders (Rush et. al., 2008). Substances are commonly used legally and
responsibly.
So, what classifies substance use as “abuse”? The U.S. Department of Health & Human
Services (USDHHS, 2016), considers substance abuse as having the potential to harm the
user or those around them through the use of any substance. This explanation would
include activities such as: driving under the influence, underage drug use, injection
drug use, binge drinking, etc. Substance abuse can be considered as a mental disorder
when it begins to have a significant impact on health, social function, and the inability
to control usage. Substance use disorder often develops gradually over time with
repeated substance abuse (USDHHS, 2016).
Please consider the following resources if you or a loved one are experiencing negative
effects due to substance use.
Bullying, Self Harm & Suicide
(M. Fernando)
What is Bullying?
Bullying is a “conscious, willful, deliberate, repeated and
hostile activity marked by an imbalance of power, intent to
harm and/or threat of aggression. (Mental Health Commission,
n.d).
Bullying can come in different forms such as name-calling, punching, shoving, spreading
rumors, threatening or cyberbullying (Bullying Canada, 2018). Bullying can have negative
short-term and long-term effects on the victim which may include fear, sadness,
withdrawal, panic attacks, sleep concerns, or can affect one’s self-esteem (Bullying Canada,
2018).
According to the Mental Health Commission (n.d), “both bullying victims and those who
perpetuate bullying are at the highest risk for suicide… the development of bullying
prevention and intervention programs is vital”.
That being said, what is Suicide?
Suicide is defined “as intentional, self-inflicted death… the suicidal state of mind has been
described as constricted, filled with a sense of self-hatred, rejection, and hopelessness.”
(Centre for Suicide Prevention, n.d)
With roughly 4000 deaths by suicide a year, suicide is the 9th leading cause of death in
Canada (Government of Canada, 2016). However, the rate is possibly higher due to
unrecorded deaths by suicide. According to Government of Canada (2016) “of every 1 suicide
death there are 5 self-inflicted injury hospitalizations, 25-30 attempts, and 7-10 people
affected by suicide loss.” With that, prevention is key and it is important to recognize the
signs of someone who is having a suicidal state of mind.
Some signs include: Excessive sadness, withdrawal, changes in personality, hopelessness,
sleep issues, self-harming behavior, sufferer of trauma, sudden calmness, and if one
threatens suicide (WebMD, 2018)
A sign of suicide that was mentioned was self-harming behavior; although (like suicide and
bullying) it is not a mental illness, it may be a sign that someone needs care and support
(CMHA, n.d)tion (n.d).

“ In 2013–2014, there were nearly 2,500 hospitalizations among youth age 10 to 17 due to
intentional self-harm. This equates to 1 in 4 injury hospitalizations for youth in this age
group” (Canadian Institute for Health Information, n.d).
What is Self-Harm?
Self-harm is “also commonly known as self-injurious behavior, self-mutilation, non-suicidal
self-injury, parasuicide, deliberate self-harm, self-abuse, and self-inflicted violence.. and can
escalate into suicidal behavior” (Centre for Suicide Prevention, n.d). In other words, it is
when someone intentionally hurts themselves without intent of ending their lives and can
come in different forms such as cutting, burning or hitting (CMHA, n.d). Someone who
engages in self-harm may not want to discuss it, so it is important to recognize the warning
signs (CIHI, n.d).
According to the Canadian Mental Health Association (n.d), individuals who engage in selfharm
may “appear withdrawn, stop participating in regular activities, anger or upset easily,
have had a significant event in their lives, have unexplained cuts, or wear clothes that
inappropriate for the weather.
Taken together, if you or someone you know is being bullied and/or engaging in suicidal or
self-harming behavior, there are several resources that are available for support.
Dementia
(Maria Fernando)
What is Dementia?
Dementia is defined as “a loss of mental function that affects
daily activities caused by a loss of cells in the brain and the
breakdown of important nerve Connections” (Government of Canada, 2018).
What causes Dementia?
The most common cause of dementia is Alzheimer’s Disease and accounts for 50%-70% of
dementia in the elderly population (Pinel, 2017, p. 254; Janssen, 2013). With a high genetic
contributor, the likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease increases with age (Pinel, 2017,
p. 256; Janssen, 2013).
The second most common cause for dementia is Vascular dementia which accounts for 20%
of cases and is “often related to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes,
etc” (Janssen, 2013).
Additional irreversible causes include Huntington’s disease which is always associated with
dementia and Parkinson’s disease which may be associated with dementia (Pinel, 2017,
pp.252-253). Here, it is worth noting that there are some causes of dementia which may be
treatable (ie, head injuries, infections, etc.) so it is important to explore what is causing one’s
dementia (Janssen, 2013).
According to Alzheimer Society Canada (2018), the number of individuals living with
dementia, including alzheimer’s is over half a million and is expected to rise to 937,000 by
2031 based on the 25,000 new cases every year.
Do you or somebody you love suffer from Dementia? This book contains a list of resources
that you can contact for information and support regarding dementia.
