ACTIVITY 9: Clip the initial sound
Use this activity when children are able to link the letter symbol and the sound.
Cards are provided on pages 119—123.
The children will also need one peg each.
Each card has a picture of an object. Beneath the
picture are three letters.
The children say the name of the object,
then the sound they hear at the beginning
of the word.
They look at the letters beneath the picture and clip
a peg on the letter symbol for the initial sound in the
word.
Words depicted on cards:
1—scissors, astronaut, igloo, tomato, pencil, nurse
2—cake, kettle, elbow, hand, rhinoceros, mermaid
3—dragonfly, garden, orange, umbrella, lollipop, fork
4—banana, jeep, zoo, helicopter, whale, violin
5—yawn, quiet, chair, shark, thorn, them
• Isolate the initial sound in words
ACTIVITY 10: Beginning sounds
Use the game boards on pages 124—131 for this activity.
Each game board is for use by two players.
Each player will require one dice and 8 coloured
counters/markers. The colour of each player’s
counters should differ.
The aim of this game is for players to take turns to
identify pictures with the same beginning sound.
If a player cannot find a matching pair, he/she
misses a turn.
There is no winner in this game—players work
together to cover the game board with counters.
Before playing the game, name all the objects on
the game board.
Each initial sound and matching objects are listed
at the bottom of each game board.
