As the story moves forward, it’s clear Jesus knew what was
coming. He anticipated it when he shared the Jewish Passover
meal, offering his disciples the loaf of bread and cup of wine as
symbols of his soon-to-be-broken body and shed blood. Later,
Jesus was overcome with agony and grief as he stared down
what was ahead of him: his arrest and condemnation to death
on charges of blasphemy.
While the climax to Christ’s story might seem like things
had spun out of control, that’s the furthest from the truth!
Because the one theme that holds this and the next chapter
together is that God was unfolding his perfect plan for our
rescue through his Suffering Servant, Jesus the Anointed One!
Discover the Heart of God
• After reading Mark 14:1–72, what did you notice,
perhaps for the first time? What questions do you
have? What did you learn about the heart of God?
• How did the disciples (compare Matthew 26:8–9)
respond to the woman who broke the expensive
perfume on Jesus’ head? How did Jesus respond?
• How did the disciples respond when the soldiers
came for Jesus after Judas betrayed him?
