Lesson 12
Hope-Filled New
Beginnings
MARK 15:42–16:20
“Don’t be afraid. I know that you’re here
looking
for Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified.
He isn’t here—he has risen victoriously!” (Mark 16:6)
Hopelessness. Despair. Devastation. Fear.
These emotions must have dominated Jesus’ followers at
the beginning of today’s reading. Who could blame them? In
one fell swoop, Jesus’ movement of rescue, healing, and
release seemed to evaporate. The powers that be had won.
Jesus and his disciples had lost. What would that mean for
them—for their lives and livelihood?
And yet, like a biting, deep-freeze winter that gives way to
a new, hope-filled spring, their hopelessness transformed into
relief, their despair into joy, their fear into awestruck wonder.
