Timeball tower reopening

SEVEN YEARS after
being almost completely
destroyed, Lyttelton’s
restored Timeball tower
will officially
reopen to the
public next Friday.
After sustaining
damage in the
February 22,
2011, earthquake,
the semideconstructed
station was
then damaged
beyond repair during an
aftershock later that year.
Only the tower section

of the 1876-built structure
could be restored. The $3
million project started
in July last year. Heritage
New Zealand director
southern region Sheila
Watson said the
restoration of the
tower and flagpole
was finished in
June, but the area
remained closed
as landscaping was
finished.

dependent,
such as aspects of the
stonemasonry and
rendering work. The result

reopen the site,” Ms
Watson said.
After an opening
ceremony, people will be
able to visit the site during
daylight hours, while at
night the tower will be lit
up. Flag displays will also
feature during the year.
“As well as a great picnic
spot, or simply to go an
enjoy views of the harbour,
it captures the history and
heritage of the site through
what has been returned
and interpretation panels,”
Ms Watson said.
