Battle to beat high rate of skin cancer
• By Anan Zaki
MORE THAN 300 people will
die from melanoma by the end of
the year.
It is the most serious form of
skin cancer and New Zealand
leads the world in melanoma
rates.
As the summer heat edges
closer and daylight hours get
longer, people
are being urged
to get their
skin checked.
The
Canterbury
Charity
Hospital will
Victoria
Scott-Lang
host free skin
checks on
Saturday for
those aged
over 50.
In the latest Ministry of Health
regional data, the Canterbury
District Health Board registered
309 new melanoma patients in
2015.
In the same year, 85 per cent of
new patients in the country were
aged over 50.
The free testing at the charity
hospital is organised by Skincan
NZ, an organisation aimed at
raising awareness for skin cancer.
Dermatologist Victoria
Scott-Lang is one of the doctors
volunteering her time for the free
checks.
“Patients will be checked from
the top of their heads to their
feet. Their whole skin will be
checked,” she said.
“We examine them with a
dermatoscope, a really high
powered magnifying lens,” Dr
Scott-Lang said.
A 2012 Ministry of Health
study showed that age is the
highest risk factor for melanoma
due to having weaker immune
systems and thinner skin.
Dr Scott-Lang says other risk
factors should be considered as
well.
“Someone with a family history
of melanoma should be aware
that their own risk increases.”
“Anyone with fair skin that
burns easily, has wrinkling, you
should be thinking about testing
from age 30 onwards,” Dr Scott-
Lang said.
But the best way of prevention
is sunscreen and reapplying it
throughout the day, she said.
Skincan NZ is also launching
the city’s first free sunscreen
dispenser tomorrow at Margaret
Mahy Family Playground.
Said Skincan NZ founder
Leeann Marriott: “We’re
launching three across
Christchurch. They will also be
at the Botanical Gardens and
Scarborough playground.”
“We’re hoping to spread them
further afield but we’re just
trialling it for six months,” Mrs
Marriott said.
