of the nation and at 19.05 Church bells will be
“Ringing out for Peace".
around the country Penn and Tylers Green will
be participating in this nationwide programme.
Volunteers from the British Legion, The P&TG
Residents Society and the church will
coordinate a parallel service of tribute to the
fallen servicemen of Tylers Green and Penn.
58 crosses, with names attached will be
erected in a grid pattern on the front common
more about the stories of these local residents
and where possible, visit their old homes.
during the Great War. If you have any
memorabilia or photographs which could be
used in the exhibition please contact Tina at
the village hall.
The crosses on the common idea originated
from Jan Carey of Hillcroft Road, Tylers Green,
Royal British Legion
Remembrance Services
The Royal British Legion is
recognised as the
nation’s custodian of
Remembrance. As
part of this
commitment, in
November each year
at local war memorials
and churches around
the country, and the
Cenotaph in Whitehall, the Legion
holds Remembrance Services to honour The
Fallen. This year, will be a commemoration of
the centenary of the end of the First World War.
The local Branch of the Royal British Legion
organises a Remembrance Service every
Remembrance Sunday in a church within its
area of Hazlemere, Tylers Green and Penn. This
year the service will be held in Holy Trinity
Church, Amersham Road, Hazlemere, 3.00pm
on Sunday 11th November. Representatives
from County, District and Parish Councils have
been invited to attend, and local youth
organisations will take an active role in the
service. Everyone is welcome to attend and
refreshments will be served after the service.
Wreaths will be laid at the service and a
2-minute silence will be marked by the Last
Post and Reveille bugle calls. After the service,
the Legion will place the wreaths on the war
memorials in Penn, Tylers Green and
Hazlemere.
This year, Remembrance Day and
Remembrance Sunday both fall on the 11th
November and villagers can be expected to
attend morning service in their own church.
Therefore, the traditional 11 o’clock service on
the Back Common will not be held.
Last year, the Legion began a new initiative
called ‘Remembrance in the Homes’.
Remembrance Services were held for the
residents of Alde House, Bury Lodge and
Hazlemere Lodge in the week leading up to
Remembrance Sunday. The services were a
shortened version of the traditional format with
bugle calls, hymns and prayers, flags and
wreaths. The services were enthusiastically
received and will be held again this year.
