espective Leagues. When we’re good, we’re really good but the less said about the days that we’re bad, the better. Player-availability through this Summer has seen a big improvement on recent years despite competing events including the 2018 Football World Cup. Lots more of our Colts came of age to play in the Saturday sides, and we noted more interest this time around from occasional players or those willing to be coaxed out of retirement. Whether this was due to the long, sunny days or whether it is a sign of a more healthy playing outlook will remain to be seen but we are determined to follow up on this success in 2019 and beyond. Those that visited the cricket club in the summer will have appreciated that the Ground itself has been looking in its best shape for a number of years (aside from the parched outfield which could not be helped). So much work went on this year on the hedgerows, trees and surrounding areas and huge thanks are due in particular to Terry Bentley, Chris Judge, Craig Morris and Nick Parry for all their digging, strimming, clearing, carrying, mowing and tidying-up of the areas around the ground. It looks great and we simply could not manage without their efforts. The Ground has now entered its annual state of hibernation. The sight-screens have been returned to their winter moorings at the bottom of the field, the pitch-covers have been dismantled and the square itself has been ‘put the bed’ for ahead of its reawakening in the Spring of 2019. If you are interested in playing, scoring, Umpiring, making teas or helping out around the Ground, please get in touch. However you would like to contribute, you will be guaranteed a warm welcome and lending a hand to one of the Village’s oldest concerns is an incredibly enriching and rewarding thing to do. Penn Pond Waders Golf Society Since our last update the Waders have played at 2 superb golf courses selected by our 2018 captain, Peter Credland. Towards the end of July, we visited the wonderful Camberley Heath GC in Berkshire. High scoring was the order of the day with several players managing to defy our stringent handicap system. This event was won by David Richards scoring a magnificent 41 points. John Horton was runner-up was with 39 points, closely followed by our handicap secretary, Roger Stewart with 38 points. In August we visited Sonning GC, a firm favourite with the Waders community. For many of us, it was the first time for several months that we’d been able to play on plush, green fairways, afforded by their excellent course watering facility. Congratulations to ‘Doc’ Martin Smith who weighed in with an impressive 37 points. Runner-up was Paul Talbot with 35 points Our organisers have found 2 great venues for our 2 final events of 2018. We will hold our Prestige Golf Day on Friday 2nd November at Foxhills GC, Surrey, followed by our Captain’s Charity Day at Ashridge GC on Friday 30th November.
