By Kye Yeung, SCRS Chairman If you have never been to the SEMA Show, I can’t imagine a better year to make it your first. And even if you have seen them all year after year, I feel confident that the best is yet to come! Finding a Home In my time serving on the board of the Society of Collision Repair Specialists (SCRS), I’ve had the pleasure of watching the collision-repair industry blossom at the SEMA Show. I’ve had a front-row seat as our crucial segment in the automotive aftermarket found its home in the North Hall of the tradeshow floors, and as the programs, support and deliverables for attendees found root and flourished. There is nowhere the collisionrepair industry can find greater advantages or opportunities than through the Repairer Driven Education (RDE) series and the SEMA Repairer Driven Education Schedule Monday, October 29 3:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m. • RD1–2025 The Millennial Takeover– How to Find, Train and Pay Qualified People Mike Lanza, manager of global business consulting services, Sherwin-Williams Automotive Product Finishes; Room N233 • RD2–Corrosion Protection: Is Your Shop Ready for the Post-Repair Inspection Era? Shawn Collins, senior technical service engineer, 3M Automotive Aftermarket Division; Room N237 • RD3–Gauges of Your Business: Maximize Profits in Your Collision Shop Jim Anderson, senior consultant, DRIVE; Room N241 Tuesday, October 30 9:30 a.m.–11:30 a.m. • RD4–Auto Body Growth Hacks Ryan Taylor, CEO, Bodyshop Booster; Matthew McDonnell, president, Big Sky Collision; Room N233 • RD5–Preparing for Negotiations Eric Newell, chief operating officer, Tom & Ed’s Autobody; Andy Tylka, Tom & Ed’s Autobody; Room N237 Kye Yeung, SCRS chairman. Show. I love that the collaboration between two great industry associations can be credited with such a positive contribution to industry resources, and I’m incredibly proud to be part of the team at SCRS that has worked side by side with those at SEMA to find ways to challenge ourselves each year to refresh curriculums, seek out talented subject-matter experts and reinvent the program in ways that speak specifically to industry needs. Networking I’ve shared in the past that the greatest value I receive from the Show is taking the time to break away from the day-to-day and surrounding myself with peers who are equally hungry for information and inspiration. There is nothing comparable to letting the spark and enthusiasm of the Show take over. It has • RD6–Understanding Shop Liability in This New Era of Diagnostics, Calibrations and Programming Michael Quinn, senior vice president of business development, AirPro Diagnostics; Chuck Olsen, executive director of operations, AirPro Diagnostics; Aaron Clark, vice president of technical compliance, Assured Performance; Scott Kaboos, assistant manager, collision marketing, American Honda Motor Co. Rush, manager of business consulting services, Sherwin-Williams Automotive Finishes; Room N233 • RD8–Building Your Business to Meet the Direction of the OEM David Gruskos, president, Reliable Automotive Equipment; Room N237 truly never failed to rejuvenate my excitement. I’ve never walked away without a new colleague. I’ve never walked away without a new idea that has contributed to my success. And I’ve certainly never headed home without a renewed appreciation for this industry. A Challenging Industry I’m reminded most days at work why this industry is hard. I love the challenge, because the work we do is meaningful. It’s meaningful to people who are in a time of need, and we offer a great service to our communities. As much as I love what we do, sometimes getting to the best end result can be trying and tiring. The need to reset and recharge is crucial, and I’m reminded at SEMA why the challenge of this industry is fun. I’m reminded why the technology and evolving repair solutions represent a better, safer tomorrow, and how expansive that opportunity is for businesses like ours with an eye on the horizon ahead. I don’t think there has ever been a more pivotal time in Continued on page 42 • RD9–Facing Increased Complexity and Liability— How to Protect Your Collision Repair Business! David B.
