Thermomass Concrete Sandwich Panels &
Fire Resistance
Following the announcement of new legislation for building over 18 metres all having to be non-combustible, the construction
industry has been presented with quite a challenge and the options are few.
Fortunately, the fire properties of concrete
are well known; it does not burn. In fact,
Thermomass sandwich panels comply
with drawing 34 of the Building Regulations and
therefore do not require non-combustible
thermal insulation. The multi-storey fire test
proves this to be true. No cavity, no oxygen, any
fire is starved of the fuel it needs to burn. See
below:
That said perception is becoming reality and the
requests for thermal insulation which does not
burn and achieve A1 or A2 to Euroclass fire tests
is becoming the norm.
CSM (UK) Ltd have pioneered the use of noncombustible
thermal insulation in concrete
sandwich panels incorporating the Thermomass
connectors system in the UK and Ireland and
provide two options; cellular glass and
TmassRockpanel cores. The latter is a specialist
hybrid product made for the company for use as
a core in concrete sandwich construction.
The disadvantages are an increase in the
overall thickness of the panel and an
increase in cost, however these two facts
remain the same for which ever
construction method is being chosen.
That said, many designers are already
choosing thicker insulation to achieve
the aesthetic design required for
their buildings, therefore the trade
off in increased thickness is not
noticeable.
If building designers require
attractive high rise buildings
(such as the ones below) 100% compliant to the
fire law either perceived or otherwise, then the
Thermomass system proves the compliant
solution with certainty of programme and
certainty of cost.
