Fenwick girls steal cross country show By Anne Marie Tobin WRENTHAM — The Bis hop Fenwick girls cross country team stole the show at the Eastern Mass Cross Country Championships Saturday at the Wrentham Developmental Center, taking first place in the Division 6 meet with 58 points over runner-up Ipswich, which finished a distant second with 84 points. “The girls really controlled the meet as our depth is our strength and the girls know that,” said Fenwick coach Steve Czarnecki. “They ran really well controlled, and really ran a great team race. We were very poised and very athletic and challenged other teams to run with them and no one did or could.” Junior Ava Mahoney led the Crusaders with a third-place finish in 20:16.36, just 40 seconds behind winner Caitlin Kaprelian of West Bridgewater (20:16.36). Also factoring in the team scoring were senior Nicole Johns (13th, 21:52.59); senior Olivia Juneau (14th, 21:53.91); senior Joy Wambui (22nd, 22:12.94) and junior Grace Kubat (25th, 22:17.45). Freshman Catherine Carter (36th, 22:50.75) and junior Corinne Ahern (43rd, 23:14.78) also ran strong races. Senior Aiden Hill was the top Crusader in the boys Division 6 race. He finished fifth in 17:15.92 and qualified for Sunday’s All- State Championships at Stanley Park in Westfield for a third straight year. The boys team finished 12th with 317 points, well behind Bellingham, which won with 49 points. “The boys are young and have a good future and Aiden just ran an exceptional race,” Czarnecki said. Freshman Wyatt Burr (26th, 18:18.11), junior Kevin Wythe (91st, 20:18.06), freshman Matthew Cirelli (105th, 20:46.44) and freshman Andre Santos (136th, 22:08.43) also contributed to the team scoring. Rounding out the top-seven were junior Nicholas Park (151st, 22:50.90) and freshman Ethan Tran (152nd, 22:56.25). In the Division 1 meets, the Peabody High girls team finished eighth out of 21 teams with 242 points, while the boys team finished 15th out of 24 teams with 372 points. Lexington swept both team titles, taking the girls race with 63 points and the boys race with 83 points. St. John’s Prep finished a distant runner-up with 136 points. Senior Claudio Rocha was the Tanners’ top performer, finishing fourth in 16:02.74. Other Tanners scoring in the meet were senior Ryan Buchanan (75th, 17:41.42), senior Pablo Rodriguez (76th, 17:41.43), junior Matthew Davidson (103rd, 18:07.30) and junior Jacob Farhat (117th, 18:15.37). Juniors Noah Roar (120th, 18:17.63) and Cam Rich (124th, 18:20.17) also participated. Senior Alexandra Barrett led the girls team with a 30th place finish in 20:40.71, while senior Victoria Lombardi was close behind in 33rd place in 20:41.84. Seniors Sarah Enes (52nd, 21:00.64), Shannon O’Connell (58th, 21:12.68) and Lexi Bettencourt (74th, 21:39.07) rounded out the top-five Tanners who scored. Junior Emily McDonald (105th, 22:20.01) and sophomore Cassia Picardy (118th, 22:58.26) also ran. WEEKLYNEWS.NET - 978-532-5880 NOVEMBER 15, 2018 St. John’s soccer team falls in D1 North final By Harold Rivera LYNN — A bittersweet Saturday for St. John’s Prep athletics ended with a 2-1 loss for the No. 9 Eagles soccer team at the hands of No. 3 Lincoln- Sudbury in the Division 1 North final at a windy Manning Field. The Warriors scored two goals in the first half and survived a late St. John’s threat in the second period, when senior forward Sam Smith scored on a penalty kick, to advance to the state semifinal. The Eagles end their season at 15-3-4. “It was a great year,” St. John’s coach Dave Crowell said. “I don’t think anybody expected us to be here. We graduated eight of our starters from last year. We went to the EMass Final last year. This is really a whole new team, pretty much. I’m extremely proud of these guys and how far we came. If you asked me in August if we’d be here, I’d say ‘no.’ If you asked me in mid-October, I’d say ‘we have a pretty good chance.’ We beat three really good teams to get here.” Eagles goalie Christian Buckley played a solid game in net, keeping Lincoln- Sudbury’s offense at bay in the second half St. John’s within striking distance. Buckley finished with five saves. “Christian was awesome,” Crowell said. Christian’s been the backbone for us all season.” Things didn’t start well for the Eagles in this one. Starting forward/midfielder Ethan Ambrosh, a junior, suffered a broken ankle in the early minutes of the game. After 14 minutes of scoreless play in the first half, Lincoln-Sudbury’s Joseph Akisik broke the ice with the game’s first goal. With 12:30 remaining in the half, Joseph Mepham picked up a rebound and kicked it into the back of the net to give the Warriors a 2-0 advantage. Eagles junior midfielder/forward Kuol Majok sent a few shots in Warriors goalie Connor Lachman’s direction but the netminder made the stops. St. John’s trailed 2-0 at recess. “I’m not making any excuses but we lost Ethan in the first couple minutes, he broke his ankle,” Crowell said. “Lincoln-Sudbury’s a great team. They scored two good goals. We would’ve liked another five minutes. We changed our formation up, we tried to get more forward. We did what we could. Tonight wasn’t our night. “I think the wind had the effect tonight more than anything,” Crowell added. “All the goals that were scored were with the wind at our backs.” The Warriors came close to putting the icing on the cake when Akisik made his bid for his second goal of the night two minutes into the second period. Akisik’s shot hit the post and St. John’s dodged a bullet. Two minutes later, Buckley saved a Warriors free kick. After junior midfielder Zachary Davis nearly put the Eagles on the board with a nifty header, Smith did the trick with a penalty kick goal to make it a 2-1 game. That was all the offense the Eagles had in store, however. St. John’s 2, East Boston 1 At Manning Field Nov. 7, the Eagles just barely got the better of No. 4 East Boston, 2-1, in the Division 1 North semifinals.
