FIBER ARTS Creative Sewing VICKY NOLAN ABILITY: ALL Work on individual new or unfinished projects under supervision of a qualified sewing instructor using sewing machines, sergers and/or computer embroidery machines. This is unstructured lab time to be productive and creative and make clothing, alterations, home projects and unique gifts. Students need to bring materials or supplies to the first class that they attend. Beginners are welcome. Tuesdays, Apr 2–May 7 | 5:45–9:15PM $207 for 6-week workshop Kooky Kanzashi VICTORIA REGINA ABILITY: ALL Kanzashi is a traditional cloth-folded flowers that covered Japanese hair ornaments. Inject a modern-vintage Japanese vibe into your life. Whether you are inspired by kimonohime fashion style or fascinated by Japanese Geisha hair ornaments, this workshop will give you new ribbon welding skills for hat or hair projects. Students will learn basic techniques to make petals and a kissing ball. Saturday, Feb 9 | 9AM–1PM $47 for 1-day workshop Materials Fee: $10 Talk Derby to Me VICTORIA REGINA ABILITY: ALL In this class, you will expand your millinery knowledge by learning how to block an individually sinamay hat on a wooden block. You will then wire, edge and adorn your wide-brimmed hat using age-old millinery techniques. You will be equipped with relevant skills to make more advanced hats with this popular hat-making material. Learn about rolled edges, leaves and flower-making used to trim the hat. Saturdays, Mar 9–30 | 1–4PM $150 for 4-week workshop Materials Fee: $50 Re-Inventing Clothes JACKIE SCOTT ABILITY: BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE Re-purpose and re-invent clothes from your closet or the thrift store. Students will learn about patterns, design, fitting, and sewing. Each student will receive individual assistance on design, measurements, pattern alterations, laying out fabric and more. Thursdays, Jan 10–31 | 6–9:30PM $156 for 4-week workshop Materials Fee: $10 JACKIE SCOTT ABILITY: ALL Fabric Art & Architecture Create your own fabric by combining leftover scraps or bits of favorite garments. Similar to quilting but more free-form with undulating lines, students will assemble enough square inches of “Fabric Art” to cut out a project such as a fun bag, pillow or garment detail, then stitch up the scheme. JEWELRY Denbow Harrell Embellished Cuffs KIRSTEN DENBOW ABILITY: ALL In this workshop, you will use basic metalworking techniques of sawing and piercing and soldering to create at least one cuff bracelet. You can make them simple or complex and make as many as time allows! Tuesday, Feb 5 | 9AM–4PM $80.50 for 1-day workshop Materials Fee: $20 One Day Earrings KIRSTEN DENBOW ABILITY: ALL Looking for something simple you can learn to do at home? Learn some basic metalworking skills and make a pair of earrings! The skills taught in this workshop use minimal tools and can easily be done at home with little space or investment. Tuesday, Mar 5 | 9AM–4PM $80.50 for 1-day workshop Materials Fees: $20 Bang Out Some Bangles KIM HARRELL ABILITY: ALL Using basic metalsmithing techniques, we will make one to three bangles. You will solder, polish and learn a variety of texturing and embellishment techniques to enhance your bangles, including stamping letters and numbers. A variety of metals will be used. Thursdays, Feb 21–28 | 6:30–9:30PM $69 for 2-week workshop Materials Fee: $30 Open Studio: Design, Make or Finish a Jewelry Project KIM HARRELL ABILITY: INTERMEDIATE, ADVANCED This three-week session is designed for the student who has had two or more jewelry fabrication workshops at the ASLD or anywhere else in the last 18 months. Instructor will guide you through inspiration to completion of your jewelry project or assist you with completing work you were unable to complete. Anything goes in this open studio! Thursday, Mar 7–21 | 6:30–9:30PM $103.50 for 3-week workshop Materials Fee: $25 Bezel Stone Setting for a Ring or Pair of Earrings KIM HARRELL ABILITY: INTERMEDIATE, ADVANCED Design and make a simple ring or pair of earrings and incorporate a set stone in your piece(s). Sterling silver will be used for creating bezel settings. Students will be given a demonstration and shown examples of this most ancient of techniques. Thursday, Apr 11–25 | 6:30–9:30PM $103.50 for 3-week workshop Materials Fee: $40 How to Make a Simple Silver Ring KIM HARRELL ABILITY: BEGINNER, INTERMEDIATE This workshop focuses on acquiring basic jewelry skills from design development to the completion of a silver ring. Learn how to work with silver to create jewelry using the methods of piercing, measuring, soldering, filing and finishing. This class does NOT cover stone setting.
